The Civ Shout-Out thread

I find that most rankings are meaningless to me, in terms of "Civ A is top ten" or "Civ A is better than Civ B". The civ elimination threads are even worse, because they often get eliminated based on totally differing priorities. Babylon is good at Science and Shaka is good at Domination. It doesn't matter or even make sense to say which one is better "overall", I think.

But! I think it would be useful (and fun) to give credit where credit is due to civs that are *noticeably better than average* in certain ways, namely:

Victory Conditions (effectiveness, not fun, which is covered below. Feel free to say "All VC" if you believe they're better than average at all victory types)
Map Types (Please specify a map type only if you think they're better at one map type than another)
Fun Factor
Uniqueness (IE playstyle different from other civs)

So, without further ado, the Civ Shout-outs thread! To keep this simple, only put down the civs you *actually have play experience with*. I don't care if you *imagine* that Assyria would be fun to play. If you haven't played Assyria, don't vote on them! For that matter, don't feel obligated to vote on every civ. And if you think every civ is fun... please only mention the ones that are *more fun than average*.

There are no grades: You give a shout-out to a civ for the things they're better at than average. # of shout-outs will be tracked and assigned to each civ for each category.

It will end up looking like this:

Shout-outs

Indonesia - Continents: 5, Fun Factor: 2
Poland - Domination: 20, Science: 15

There are no down-votes, and please do not vote twice for the same Civ.

Example post:

"Indonesia for Continents and Fun Factor. Here's why: Blah blah blah"

I'll try to keep the tally updated for each civ/category mentioned. You will see only the civ name until they're up-voted in at least one category.

Here we go!

Arabia - Pangaea: 1, Domination: 1

I'll kick it off with an easy one:

Attila deserves a shout-out for Pangaea and Domination. Aaaand, that's about it. :D

I'd bother to explain, but I think it's self-explanatory?

Here's a more interesting one: Germany for Cultural Victory.

The Hanse production bonus lets you pump out museums and archaeologists at a ridiculous pace, in every city.

Dido is my favorite, and has been since G&K came out. I generally play her on the Perfect World 3 script, which is basically Terra with some touches here and there to make the map feel more realistic. Though, I've gotten along just fine on Pangea before, just so long as there's a coast to connect your cities, and she starts on it, she's great :)

I play her because I find her the most fun, so I guess her fun factor could be responsibly placed at around sixty-four million and three, give or take a few units of factor. I think I feel most comfortable with her because I don't like to be constrained when it comes to city placement, with the free harbors you can drop cities pretty much wherever and whenever you want, so that's really nice. Also I prefer the top half of the tech tree, and she does well on that path.

Her abilities can be leveraged to go for any of the VCs, so you don't feel pigeonholed when playing her. Her colours are nice and soothing, her war/peace themes are great, and she's generally a total babe on all other fronts I neglected to mention. I play other civs a lot too, don't get me wrong, but I always go back to Carthage.

Spoiler :
Oh and elephants

The only bad thing about playing her is you don't get to see her leader scene, and I can't bring myself to play a game filled with Didos because I think my heart would stop.

Edit: Actually --and this only literally just came to me now in my alcohol and painkiller induced stupor, but her war theme is really reminiscent of some of the songs from Total Annihilation, composed by the godly Jeremy Soul, so that's awesome too. Pretty much I don't think there's anything I don't find awesome about Carthage in this game. It actually borders on irrational obsession and were she still alive I think a restraining order might be necessary.

England, fun on continents, for domination. Longbowmen.
Arabia, fun on pangea, for domination. Camel archers.
Inca, fun anywhere, for domination. terra farms.
Assyria, fun for domination (G*K only though). Seige Tower.
Babylon, fun for science. Great Scientists.

Shout out to Austria.
I have found annexing a city state in the new world on Terra maps makes for some fun exploration and wars there, especially in MP.
So, Austria for Terra and Fun Factor.

Egypt, fun anywhere, fun for ICSsacred sites, for domination, OCC wonders I'll win something on Immortal and below. UA, UB, Chariot archers.
Mongols fun everywhere except archipelago, fun for domination. Keshiks and Khan.
Incas fun everywhere except archipelago, fun for all VC. UA, terra farms with 6 food and 3 hammers.
Poland fun everywhere, fun for that strat I want to test. UA.
Sweden fun everywhere, fun for dom, science, diplo. UA and Caroleans.
Austria fun for pangeas and continents, late domination. UA, UB and UU.
England fun everywhere, fun for artillery-domination in medieval age. UUs.

I can see how Austria would be fun on Terra. Spain is definitely great for that map. :)

Shoshone for early game fun factor. It just thrills me to have a Pathfinder race across rough terrain and choose the ancient ruins bonus. It thrills me even more to plop down a city near another Civ and grab a bunch of juicy tiles.

Ok, to avoid confusion, please don't put "fun for Domination"... fun is a category in my silly list, and *effectiveness* at domination is another. If you have fun going with a civ, just say "Fun Factor & Domination".

Also, if you put "everywhere" I'm going to ignore it. If you mean something else, be specific. The idea behind the map types is to indicate which map types they're better at. If they're equally effective on every map type, that's covered by saying "Domination". So, just specify the ones they're extraordinarily effective on. I consider Denmark more effective on Archipelago and Continents than they are on Great Plains, for example. It's noticeable. So please only specify a map type when you've noticed they're more effective than on others.

If you go back and edit your post, please make a note of what you changed it from so I can update the count properly.

Thanks. :)
