Played on Civ 2 MGE with modded civilization names, using the Civ2UIALauncher.

The early history of the Gallic people is of comparatively little interest compared to period started by the shocking rise of hard line Fundamentalist leadership in the 1960s. Perhaps it was unavoidable, given the tacit agreement by the great Funan and Scythian hegemonies to split the world between them.

Suffice to say, the Gauls were a peaceful Republic, content to send trade fleets and act as technology and map brokers for the world. Relations were uneasy, but calm, with their Parthian neighbors to the west, and the Gauls slowly expanded out to the east. They were one of 3 nations to send colony ships to Alpha Centauri, and while they were the last to arrive, this marked a high point in Gallic history.

However, in the 1960s Scythia rapidly conquered the Parthians, bringing a hungry world-class power to Gaul's doorstep. The centuries of friendly trading relations did little to ease Gallic fears as armies massed on their doorstep.

Under this threat, a Fundamentalist faction seized control, setting Gaul on a course to reshape the world...

1973
In 1973, two Gallic transports moved quietly through the waves. One approached the Scythian homeland, while the other approached the southern edge of the Funan empire. The cargo? Saboteurs - and the dangerous materials to plant nuclear devices. A few fanatical soldiers accompanied each transport, serene in their total commitment to the cause.

With carefully planned timing, the saboteurs infiltrated the Funan and Scythian capitals - their armed escorts waited a ways outside the cities. Carefully synchronized charges were placed, and then a holocaust of nuclear fire shook each city, wiping out the ruling elite of both empires in one fell swoop. The armed escorts swiftly moved in, capturing the cities.

In the chaos that followed these carefully orchestrated events, new nations emerged. Previously conquered peoples took this opportunity to declare their independence.

Babylon fractured from Funan. Greece from Scythia. In the days that followed, Gallic tanks rolled west, passing the newly-raised flags of Grecian independence and pushing the Scythian occupation forces into the sea.

In the decades that followed these shocking atrocities, the world descended into seemingly endless war. The Gauls maintained firm friendships with these new nations, while no attempt was ever made to end hostilities with the Scythians and Funan. For the Gallic leadership it was simple: them or us. Thus, no atrocity was too severe, no action too unconscionable. Cities were razed, nukes were used.

The Gallic navy was never large enough to compete with the larger empires' fleets - so a great air war commenced as fleets of bombers took to the skies over the Scythian homeland. Over decades, eventually the Scythian defenses were ground down, and the Gallic flag was raised by paratroop divisions in the ashes of the Scythian capital. Once again the Scythian empire split, birthing the Armenian faction. Scythia was left but a shadow of its former self, and yet...war rages on.

Meanwhile, the Babylonian Wall (as the Gauls called it) kept Funan from dealing too directly with the Gallic frontier - nonetheless, constant raiding parties had to be fended off. Funan remained the great superpower, and wary of the fact that they were making inroads against Babylon, it was time to dust off old tricks...

Babylonian border guards looked the other way as Gallic saboteurs once again crossed the sea - heavily guarded by AEGIS cruisers to fend off barrages of Funan cruise missiles. Flush with cash, they bribed some dissatisfied Funan military personnel, and made their way to the capital.

Once again, a mushroom cloud rose over Funan's seat of government.

And once again, nations were birthed in the chaos. The Maurya raised their flag against their former overlords.

2019 (Present Day)
The world is fractured, shaped by internal strife and civil war. Scythia has been reduced to a minor power, although they've formed a coalition with their Armenian brethren against the Gallic warmongers.

Funan remains powerful even still, but is beset by angry former vassals on all sides.

The heartland of Gaul and Greece remains the only bastion of peace - but relations between the two are souring. Gallic garrisons are being reinforced even as military bases are being established to bring the Funan homeland within range of Gallic bombers.
