About three times a month I see a thread here posted asking for tips in reducing loading times. For some reason, the "search" function doesn't seem to be working for these posters. So I am starting a new thread which, hopefully, will be easily found.

Here is a quick list of tips to which I hope others can add:

I. The Standard Solutions

1. Reduce map size
2. Reduce graphics settings
3. Get a better computer

II. Some Other Solutions

a. Exit to desktop and start anew. I have found that loading the game fresh and uncached is actually faster than loading from the in-game menu.

b. Time is actually a quality of the manifold of experience (Kant, and to some degree Einstein). Some people have erroneously called this "subjective", but if you find categories such as "objective" and "subjective" helpful, then by all means, this is the right metaphor for you. In any case, reducing the amount of time you experience spent loading can be done in the following ways:
i. Utilize the time by doing something worthwhile, such as urination, cooking, speaking to a human being, writing to your congressperson, or spending a brief amount of time to donate to Amnesty International, Unicef, or another organization which furthers good in the world.
ii. Attempt autofellatio.
iii. Accelerate to near light speed while keeping your computer in a separate room.
iv. Attain a positive and outreaching outlook on life, learn to live with the very small annoyances people in developed countries (most parts of North America and Europe, for instance) have often considered overly threatening ("oh no, the auxilliary jack for my lexus' mp3 player has a boo-boo!", "my latest computer game takes 22 seconds longer to load than my attention span!"), and attempt to cope with the fact that you do not need to dodge bullets and eat dirt while waiting for your mother to die of Aids.

OP reminds me of Shaka's Impi, surrounding the fortification and testing the Redcoats'.

You simply HAVE to exit to Main Menu if you want to load a game while you have a game loaded. There is such an enormous time difference it's amazing. This is best noted in late game maps - exiting to Main Menu loads the game almost as fast as the initial load during game startup. It's a net improvement in speed though by not having to restart the program.

The key for fast game load is - from Main Menu, Core 2 Duo 2GHz+, 3GB RAM+. I have a 3.6 Ghz Duo, 4GB, and it loads very fast. BUT, if you load a game while a game is in progress, the load is quite slow.

Exit...to...main...menu...

There's definitly some sort of memory leak with the game. I try to save, totally quit the game and reload everything every 3-4 hours as I play; it really helps with game speed. What has helped me more than anything is setting up a BTS shortcut on the desktop and having it directly load the mod I am currently playing. Nothing used to bug me more than waiting for Civ to load... and then having to wait again for it to reload with the mod.

you can load straight into a savegame too, just double-click on it.

I'm pretty sure there's a command line to set it into your desktop shortcut, but you could always just make a shortcut to the savegame file (right click on it and select "send to>desktop (create shortcut)".

I've got a logitech wave keyboard, and anytime I feel like playing civ I just hit Fn+F4 and it launches BtS. It's a programmable shortcut key combo. Very handy feature and a great ergonomic multi-media keyboard btw. That saves time loading I guess. I've never experienced any long load times, but then again my pc is kind of spiffy.. I just built it in January :).

Who loads mid game anyway?

Tip C. should be a proactive one. "Suck less and don't reload when you fail." ;)

Lol, I was reading this thread while waiting for my game to load having started it from another game. I'd never noticed before as I rarely do it but you're right - it does take a lot longer!

For anyone without a fancy keyboard, simply right-click on your desktop shortcut (I know you've all got one ;)), select properties, then the 'shortcut' tab and you'll see an option to set your own shortcut key (Ctrl+Alt+Q for me)
