The editor again and again...

Its probably just around the corner. I'll wait as long as it takes now. You know it'll be solid w/ Westlake behind it.

Dojoboy, you are an eternal optimist...

The correct answer is:
Two weeks.

You ever see the movie "Money Pit"? All the work being done to the character's house, he'd ask the contractors when the job would be done. No matter the task, from fixing the faucet to fixing the roof, the default answer was always "two weeks"...
Trabpukcip, I think the best thing to do is lose all hope, relegate the editor to MS-class vaporware, and start speculating on editors for MOO3 instead. (or, get up and go the bathroom, then come back and hit the refresh button... You know, kinda like when you order something at restaurant where there are only two waiters serving 700 people, so inevitably, after the 45 minute wait, the food [and the chance to answer when they say "Can I get you anything else? Shotta tequila?"] comes in that 38 second window that you dash to the john...

I agree, dojoboy is a saint and a hero.

Back to topic: the editor will be useful in re-vamping some of my enjoyment in the game. It's still a great game; I am enjoying two things at the moment … the new graphics mods from Snoopy, and trying to stay in the game at higher levels when all seems lost. God, the AI is annoying at times. I really hope we get PTW, so that I can play other dumb iMac folks like me. (-;

Okay, forgive my ignorance, but, how do you use a mod? Is it simply a new civ3bic file?

"mod," as you can probably guess, is simply short for modification. Snoopy's mods are graphics files (.pcx format) that replace the original files in the "Art" folder. They can be pretty neat, and some cases, even help game play by increasing clarity of exactly what it is. I haven't tried unit mods, but I think you need the editor to do that (anyone?). I am a big fan of terrain mods (like Snoopy's, et al).

If you do download a file, I recommend backing up your Civ folder before replacing anything. I usually put additions in one at a time, taking the Firaxis original out and into a "Firaxis art" folder so if the new mod is corrupted (or isn't as cool as I thought it would be), then I can trash the download and easily restore the old file. That help?

Hey, you've been mysteriously absent from the boards. You're not getting to play around with a beta-editor now are ya? ;)

If so, then your reappearance here.....must mean......HEY GUYS, THE EDITOR IS READY![party]

Ooh, I scare myself sometimes! ;)

I wish..... I have heard nothing about the editor. I haven't been here much as I have been trying out WC3....now if I can just find some people to help me learn better tactics......

Okay, as a pessimist-leaning realist, I've got to nay-say the appearance of the editor. Will the editor appear soon? Nay.
Okay. Maybe. Let's define "soon." Is there a geologist in the house?
Face it: the editor is bigfoot, nessie and Martian Elvii with polarized glasses and bronzed sideburns, all rolled into one. It is being protected by the same guys that are in charge of Area 51. It's a conspiracy I tell you! They took the so-called beta testers, the fans most likely capable of cobbling something together themselves, and switched the contracts they had to sign. They weren't NDAs... they were DNRs!*

Maybe.

*Just in case (or the joke goes nowhere...) :
NDA: Non-Disclosure Agreement.
DNR: Do Not Resuscitate order.

So how's the editor coming, Brad? (I guess it's my turn to crack) :D

It's coming along. I've been alternating between the Civ3 editor and JK2 in a bit of a delicate balancing act.

It's gotta be somewhat past "alpha"... aalpha? Alphaa? Bethpha? Alta? Altoid? The curiously suspended editor?
I mean, user-unfriendly as it might've been, they had to have some way to test maps before they released the Mac version (sans said editor), oh, say... 9 months ago (9 months, 10 days, as of this post).
Memory Lane; from Westlake site: CivIII for Mac Goes Gold, December 21, 2001! (http://www.westlakeinteractive.com/news0255.html).

Not that I'm counting or anything...
EJ :ack:

ps: Brad, was there an editor interface of *any* sort or did you just use a Hex editor and tweak in code?

It's pretty close to beta. The rule editor portion is mostly done, the map editor portion still needs cleanup. During the port of the game itself, we tested maps by downloading them and running them in the Civ3 app - no editors involved. To be honest, I've never found myself needing to use an editor during the development of the game itself.

Mr. Oliver, I don't want to distract you from the editor, but I've got a technical question that was inspired by:

Which made me think (and that's no mean feat itself). Would we have to be patched to 1.29 before a PTW expansion could come to the Mac, or could it be rolled into one off-the-shelf commercial purchase? (wink-wink; nudge-nudge; a touch of cha-ching for Westlake... know what I mean?)

I honestly have no idea.
