I've had it, I'm playing as the Vikings, I just entered the Middle ages and I am on a continent map.
Early on I sent out suicide galleys and currahs and discovered two other continents. Then one of my suicides found another contanent and saw two civ boarders of differant colors! But the very next turn it sunk! This has happened to every galley I've sent out there since, why can't I make it?!?
Any suggestions?

Try saving and reoloading if it bothers you that much. This is also known as cheating, however ;)

it's the luck of the draw. Each boat has a certain percentage of sinking in deep water. Discovering Astronomy and Navigation help reduce chances of this occuring. Use caravels next time. Mr. Do's idea won't work if Preserve Random Seed is on, because all the random events, such as volcanos and combat is the same that it was the last time it occured. That's my explanation...

Lol, I like that Idea, it's not cheating, I already saved and quit it was so annoying... maybe a nice easy game on chieftain will help...

If it never sank, it wouldn't be called "suicide". So what else do you expect?

Those small vessels are just not sea worthy to enter the open ocean, especially the Curraghs (is that how its spelled?). You can get lucky here and there and it may be worth a try sometimes, just don't spend to much production on them. I think it helps to have a seafaring nation. You need the bigger, more sea worthy Caravels to really start exploring the oceans.

I disagree. Always send as many suicide ships as it takes to reach the other continent. The trade monopoly benefits far outweigh the losses of a few hundred shields (not that I've ever even seen it take that much). Hell, even in Civ2, where trade was far less important I would often rush for Trade and Marco's on arch. maps just for the contacts, not the embassies. The only exceptions are if you've only got about one civ left to reach, in which case it may not be worth it if they are more than 3 or 4 'dangerous' turns away. But, as in many situations, there are about half or less of the total civs on your continent it is definitely worth it.

Just be patient, dear compatriot. :)
I had about exactly the same situation in my current game, only that I was not even playing a seafaring civ, but China. I am the lucky owner of GL and sharing a small continent with the Babylonians and the Mongolians. Somewhere in the late Ancient Age I had to wipe out theMongolians since they were getting in my hair all the time, so to get something out of my wonder I had to contact other civs somewhere out there. I think I lost something like 12 galleys before I finally managed to reach the neighbouring continent and thereby getting in touch with the Celts and Arabians. Now the free techs are just rolling in...
So I guess that if you are persistent, you will finally get your reward. :D

Here is some real taunting. I was trying to protect the Zulu from being destroyed by surrounding their only city with units. Shaka just loves screwing around with me.

Why stop them from being destroyed?

wow. that looks like the romans in my current game :)

reason to keep them from being destroyed is to keep the other ai in more wars. this hurts their economies and usually also reputations and may reduce the chances of them declaring war on you since they *think* they are already occupied with war. also if you are way behind in tech and the zulus have a few techs you need but dont want to pay them for you may want to keep them around for a while until you gain other techs that you can trade to them for their techs.

okay, but that's why I think you should gain techs of conquered nations, it is not like the native people that survive the war are just going to stop using the technology when they conquer u (please don't yell at me for putting in sumething that's suppose to be in civ4 suggestions).

I like to keep small weak Civs around just because...

There's no point occupying corrupt cities.

Also I usually make more money keeping small Civs around and pawning outdated techs, resources and luxuries to them.

What's an outdated luxury?
