How many techs do you get from the GREAT LIBRARY wonder? I added levels to the answer.

I guess im one of the only people out there that take full advantage of the G-Library. In the early game i go 90% science till i get literature ASAP. Then 0% science until i discover education thanks to the efforts of the AI. By now i have monarchy or republic and all that cash i have saved builds many improvements and units- so at the end though i may be on a level peg tech wise but my infrastructure is always superior.

of course this strategy is required only in certain situations on the monarchy and above difficulty levels.

If you don't have Bronze Working at the start, do you go for that before Alphabet??

At Regent, I've gotten three techs once, and nine another time. That with 1.17. I also only got two once.

The GL making itself obsolete by developing Education is really dumb.

Your right you should make it obsolete by having Rome attack the city :p

When I play a builder-style game, I build the GL and get a bunch of tech out of it. Let's see...

horsebackriding, warrior code, mysticism, monarchy, code of laws, pottery, mapmaking, construction (I usually research math, currency, republic myself), often Monotheism, sometimes Engineering, Invention, Chivalry, Education (sometimes not, as I sometimes research it myself to get those universities up and running... it all depends). Oops, I voted 4-7 and I should have voted 8+. Monarch level.

... the issue is to also make contact with all civs as soon as possible, in order to gain the advantage of the GL. However, it should be possible to get into contact with the other civs early on, if you're not on separate islands and need to travel extensively.

If I'm a commercial civ I'll go for the GL as fast as I can, and then spend the minimum on research up to Education. I can still keep up in the tech race by doing this, and never loose the race. Although I may end up in difficulty on Emperor or Deity levels - I dunno, haven't dared to try those levels yet.
