This topic is not about The Great Wall Wonder.

This topic is about a recent strategy I am using against the AI. Currently playing a multiplayer game with my brother that has two big continents for a huge size map. Anyways my continent has 4 of the computer players and they are all on the north end. I ended up in the middle of the continent and a huge area to expand was below me.
Anyway by the time the middle ages started all the computer players started walking settlers to try and claim the land below me. I grew as fast as I could yet several short wars with the AI Hannibal slowed me down.

Anyways I quickly discovered that using workers and military units on my borders was working great as a barrier... and they could only get past me by using boats. Currently I have an entire line from shore to shore of military and worker units which keep the AI's illegal aliens out of my unclaimed land. Once in awhile a make an opening in the wall so all the AI settlers start walking that direction... when they get near I seal the opening and make a new opening.
The overall result has worked great as the 4 different AI's have almost a dozen settlers walking back and forth.... going no where.

If I didn't have this great wall of units at least 8 new computer towns would have been built behind me. Also I don't feel safe going to war with any of them because my military advisor says they're listed as stronger then me.

Besides WAR what other strategies have you seen work to prevent the AI from expanding with Settlers???

Build your own cities.

What you described is somewhat similar to what's known here as the Maginot line. You can find an article on that in the war academy.

I once built an entire double line of fortifications across a continent. Each with 2-3 defenders and 1 cannon/artillery and with groups of cavalry positioned at various strategic spots. At the eastern end, I provided an opening... into 2-3 tiles again entirely surrounded by forts and manned by defenders and lots of artillery - for the purpose of shooting up the incoming attackers, before going after them with cavalry.

Now I know better. I'll just attack first and claim the whole continent.

If there is land to claim between me and an AI, I like to run around with horsemen or other fast units and block the AI settlers from moving to where they want their city. This rarely makes the AI just settle where he is. Instead he is forced to retreat and try some other time - but by then I will have settled there.

Looked through the War Academy, no articles with "Maginot Line" in the title. Does anyone know which one it is?

I saw a humongous Maginot Line in one of Bamspeedy's screenshots (on OCP).

Against humans, forming a pockets of units with holes between them is probably the best defense. If you line a unit, ur spreading them too thin and if you stack them altogether, you lose out on mobility and defensive coverage.

Besides that, I presume that the artillery battles in real time take way too much time (although I haven't tested it)

Once, I had units streaming down to an AI city in a very narrow strip of land (running north to south), but there was enough space for the AI to get through, but not without being right next to my units. I had tanks, and artillery, so when the AI sent their cavs and riflement up north to try and recapture a city, they entered No-Man's-Land. Of 20-25 units, only 1 cavalry made it unscathed, but lost when attacking the city. The rest were left with 1-2 hp (even elites!). Needless to say, they were mopped up the next turn.
