Announcing a new competition for the Civilization III Hall of Fame!

The Histographic Challenge

As you know, there are monthy Gauntlet competitions. It was decided that the constraints of the Gauntlet schedule were too restrictive for a proper histographic victory, so this new challenge was devised to allow for additional competition for those brave enough to do so. You will have 3 months to complete your entry. All HoF rules will be in effect, but only the size and difficulty specified will be eligible for the Histographic Challenge, but all acceptable entries still count for HoF tables and will count towards the Histographic requirement for the Quartermasters competition. So go forth and grow your empire!

Welcome to the first Histographic Challenge. All Challenges will be announced here, with results listed here and the Annex.

Mapsize: Large
Difficulty: Demigod

This Challenge starts February First of 2008 until May First of2008. Any histographics after May first of this size and difficulty will only be acceptable as regular histographics not included in this challenge.

The winner will receive the coveted Golden Calf. Good luck and go forth and multiply!

The Histographic Challenge. I smell some lost opportunities here. The Milker's Delight. The Dairy Farm. The Cheese Factory.

So uhh, if I am not spamming now, I must, uhh, be registering or what?

Edit: and a calf does not give milk, golden or not. It should be the Holy Cow.

Interesting. Very interesting. Three months is still kinda tight for the way I tend to play, but I'll defintely have a go.
If I can fit it in around my ongoing warlord, regent and deity milkruns, not to mention the several half-finished "quick games" (and I still haven't started the Gauntlet).

edit: call me Mr. Picky, but there's a typo in teh thread title.

Three months is good as it allows for 4 games a year. I don't expect a lot of 'huge' competitions, at least on Emperor+ as they can take longer.

I finally submitted a game for this one using the Maya for 31824 points. Settings were 60%Archipelago, warm, wet, 5byo, least aggressive, no barbs. I only used 6 rivals-Arabia, Japan, Mongols, China, Zulu, and America. The dom limit for this game was 2933, about average for large archipelago. There was a wheat and one cow at the start, but I wanted to play rather than find the perfect map. There were 4 more cows, 2 wheats, and two floodplain rivers near the start that helped.

One bit of luck occured near the start as I got the Pyramids with an SGL for writing. Of course, this meant an early despotic GA pumping out settlers, but I took it. One of my plans was to use the javelin thrower to get a lot of slaves, but this didn't pan out. The starting continent was huge and the only other civ, Arabia was very far away. By 10 AD, I still had not fought any wars and had 70 cities, 264 pop, 576 dom tiles, and 96 workers with no slaves. In hindsight, I probably should have played with more civs. My score at this time was only 1456 and there were only two luxes on the starting island of about 1000 tiles. Research was also going slowly as I was just starting engineering after getting monotheism and trading for feudalism for the ai.

War with Arabia started around 150AD and by 1000AD they were eliminated and Japan on an island with the Mongols were down to 5 cities. I only captured a few slaves before I was no longer able to build the javelin thrower. I was still halfway to the dom limit with 151 cities, 1130 pop, and 190 workers including 56 slaves. I was researching steel at this time and the home island was fully railed. The world was broken up into four continent sized islands with a few smaller islands. The other ai's were keeping up in tech for the most part, making conquest with cavs difficult, though China and the Mongols still did not have infantry. I had the full compliment of luxes by now and my score was 5335.

By 1400AD, I had eliminated everyone but the Zulu and America on a large island and had reached the dom limit and the modern age. From now on, I disbanded less populous cities as I captured towns slowly from the Zulu and America. America was made an OCC in the tundra by 1660AD and never grew above size 2. I was 1 tile from the dom limit and stayed that way the rest of the game as there were no more border pops expected throughout the empire. My score at this point was 13,687 and I was gaining about 100 points a turn soon after.

Cities built temples to get a border pop and then disbanded them. The capital had to disband its university to avoid 20K by 2050AD. I built markets, granary, harbor, mass transit, courts, police stations, banks and stock exchanges where appropriate and started researching future techs in about 5 turns each at 0% sicence with scientists only. My native workers were joined in about the time I defeated America, but I still had over 100 slaves dealing with pollution. Max pop was reached in about 1860AD and I ended with 235 cities, 4466 pop,3200 tiles, 2932 dom tiles, and only 21 unworked tiles. I was researching future tech #25 at the end with the lux slider at 80% and no unhappy citizens in the empire. Total time played was just under 230 hours.

I apologize for not having a better write-up and no pictures, but I still can only connect to CFC via proxy. This isn't likely to change for a while as I've tried everything and no one else seems to be having this problem.

Good effort; should boost your ranking a bit?

You've beaten my OCC effort, anyway. :D

edit: I'm still not 100% sure what happens if you win in 2050 AD but haven't got the best in-game score; I hope that counts as a Histo win...

Thanks, Bartleby. This game will certainly help my ranking and hopefully I learned some things for a huge attempt in the future.

IIRC, even games without the best score count as a Histo win. LulThyme has a 0 score game on the tables.

It's May 1st. Any entries have to be in by midnight to be considered for this challenge.

Ok, this is closed. Thanks for your participation  We'll be publishing the results with the next update around May 15th.

Results for #1

PrinceMyshkin is the Winner, scoring 31824 with the Maya.

Bartleby submitted a 20k 1CC to try to sneak a game in for the competition scoring 355 with Babylon and came in last.

"last"? Surely "Silver medal" would show more respect. ;)

I'll try and participate in the next one. Sorry that I didn't show my face for the this one. I didn't even get around to running mapfinder on this.

That's in the HoF to follow this one, here last is still last.

Hello everyone!
The new Challenge is announced:

Mapsize: Small
Difficulty: Sid!

Good luck and go to it! This Challenge only lasts until September first 2008 so any games submitted after that date for this table will not count towards the challenge.

Sorry, I was supposed to announce it June first, but my memory has been faltering a bit lately.

3,000th post.

Yikes. I'm going to try Sumeria on a Pangaea. No Bronze Working/Warrior code opponents.
I'll probably give up fairly easily and go back to my one-turn-a-day Huge Regent Snoozefest.

I'll give this one a shot. I think my histo game is standard warlord, so not that impressive. A nice simple small SID would be good - arch map, dutch (giving me musket equivalents with feudalism)

That's pretty funny, Bartleby. Not too unusual on Sid though, at least going by the starts I've had. If they want to rush you it's usually game over no matter what you do. Even in my small Sid 100k win on archipelago, I lost my capital and 3 towns before I was able to stop an attack. I was going for 20K in that game, but plans changed.

I think I'll probably try the Dutch for this one on 60%archipelago as well as AT. They have pretty good traits for this game and are the only agricultural civ I haven't tried.
