Just ahead- there in the moonlight.
Yes its a rip-off of the Casablanca thread!

I`m referring here more to the original novel (Infinity welcomes careful drivers) rather than the sequals or TV series.

The two central characters (Lister and Rimmer) are both unfulfilled, both express the feeling of being failures.

What niether seems to notice, however, is that, as much as they dislike one another, each has set out on the path the other should have chosen.

Lister went to art school and dropped out- but we learn that Rimmer makes study time-tables that are minor works of art. If Rimmer had gone to art school- perhaps he`d have found his calling rather than slogging away at those exams.

Lister, on the other hand, turns out to be a dab-hand at space minning- managing to, virtually single handedly, mine thorium. Perhaps he should have joined the Space Corps where he would likely have been a great success (as one of his alternative selves did, in fact, do).

Any other Red Dwarf fans thought of this?

wasnt the novel just a cobbling together of plot themes from the series to spin out the franchise?
the novel came out quite a few years later as I recall

Maybe- but I`ve always preferred that first novel, and Better than Life to the TV series or the other books.

I sometimes watch Red Dwarf, the tv series. I think its the best Brittish Sci-Fi-thingy ever :)

I think you are stretching this just a tad. Both were failures because neither had the abilities to be a success not because they were in the wrong field of work. Lister didn't care about work at all and would rather spend his time drinking and eating curry. Rimmer, well, Rimmer is just Rimmer and so destined to fail.

I'm sure that passes for wit in some remote culture. Probably the same one which finds mother-in-law jokes funny.

There`s nothing like a bacon butty, a pickled onion, a pint of Yorkshire Beer and an evening of mother-in-law jokes.

Nah can`t stand him. To paraphrase Bill Kerr- why can`t these intellectuals just leave us simple people alone?
