The Middle ages Scenario

I'm currently playing as the Kievans. First of all, the Civilopedia says that Rus starts with the Viking Tech but "prefers" to research Byzantine techs, but this isn't the case, it's clearly in the Viking "flavor" and not the Byzantines, which means it's way too much work to get the Cataphracts. Not that I have any horses anyway
But, I'm doing quite well, I managed to expand quite a bit early on, I have the largest empire in the world, about on par in pop and size w/ the Byzantines. I wiped out the Poles, and I found the German relic just sitting in next to Magyar territory at one point, and their settlers had been running through my territory (it seems all the AI civs are desparate to colonize to the EAST of me). So I declared war on the Germans and just recently managed to push my way to get a North Sea port. Berzerks are great.

At about this time I also had the Byzantines declare war on me out of nowhere, I talked to them the turn before and they were "Polite" and everything. I had no defenses to speak of in the area they attacked, so they got a city, but I'm well defended now, so we'll see how it goes. Plus I've got to get that Relic to Jerusalem :b:

I haven't been able to try the Middle Ages scenarios much yet, been to busy with other scenarios. I tried it with France and conquered all of Burgundy outside of Italy.

that will be alleviated in MY middle ages scenario ;)

hopefully, I will be able to find a map maker willing to make a map streting from Scandanavia to souther Ethiopea, and from portugal and Britain almost ot India...

That would be extremely huge, and would probably put alot of attention on settling Africa, instead of Europe

I was just thinking about making a map with exactly those areas covered.

It would stretch from Iceland in the east to the Urals in the west, from the North Pole to the Southern tip of Arabia.

Here's the area I had in mind -

Not that huge. If I made one, I wouldn't go any larger than 180x180, which is a size I think most computers can handle. I might try 140x140 first, though.

As for settling, I'm more afraid of everyone going for Russia, which they always seem to do. Africa will mainly be desert, which I would make unsettlable.

interestinglly enough, around 6:30 this mourning, i contacte Loulong with the following map-

world.gif

;) its on his list, but not the biggest proirty :( but, if somone else were to volunteer... ;) :D

most of the land would already have an established NAtrion on it- I might use the same trick Firaxis did in there middle ages conquest, and make deserts unsettleable :) that will stop most of the African exapansion by non African civs ;) Russia on the other hand, will have a lot of open territory on it...

I guess you could put a terrain in Russia that is also unsettlable. Maybe a whole bunch of tundra with some open spots for settling?

i might, i wanna stay true to life for the most part though- that said, i am beginning to like the stonesfan souther border better, But I would like to fir the Mali, and SOng-HAi onto the map, as the game will span into the rennissance...which is IIIRC, along with the high middle ages, when the trade between them and Europe/Asia Minor stated to flourish

To "keep eastern russia russian" I did the following:
1) Make it all forest.
2) Make all settlers wheeled
3) Give the Russians (and in my case scandinavians and lithuanians) settlers of the non-wheeled variety.
4) Make forests impassable to wheeled.

Now Russia is impassable to the other nations settlers! :)

Settlers in the "wrong" places are a big problem on historical maps. :(

like I said, I want to keep it REAL folks, at least until I have to start making assumption, like on suggesting just what rennesance infantry for the Western Roman Empire might have looked like ;)

as such, i wount be putting unrealistic terrain, or giving unrealistic traits to things, at least not unitl I can help it, as such here are some thing I plan doing

- TRIPILING the cost of settelers- this should most definatley see even the most ardent ais expansions into russia halted to a snails crawl, at least compared to what it might be...

-possibley making settelers more expensive population wise- up to three citizens...

try to ensure that the Rus dont take no S**t from the Germans,Poles, and Franks, who seem to LOVE settiling there ;)

Put the mongols on the map, so that while settelemtn is slow, it is alomst garuanteed to be mostlly between the rus, Mongols, Turks, and a few other semi-nomadic peoples

You don't have to make the whole area forested, a solid line of trees would work. There's also the Carpathian mountains you can use to block them coming from the southeast.

You can also try to make the forest give 0 food. As most of Russia is covered with forest and tundra, it won't let much of terrain to build productive cities. And it's actually quite real :)

first off, with the addtion of the ROman Pikeman, another wonderful Dark age/medieval unit for Classical middle age civs being done, i can assure you that eventually, this scenario will be a reality ;) (although, what be real nice If i can get soem sxetch work done for some modern units with a roman theme to them, the same goes for industrial as well ;)
