Man, I got my hands on the collector's edition this morning from EB and hauled ass to load it up on my two laptops
IBM A21p
- PIII
- 512MB RAM
- ATI Rage Mobility 128
Sony VAIO TR1
- Pentium M (900)
- 512MB RAM
- Intel Integrated
Needless to say, all of my hand wringing and T&L fears have come true...
On the IBM, I installed successfully, but the graphics and sound get extremely choppy - the background is mostly black.
On the Sony, I also installed successfully, and the graphics and sound are a bit clearer and some of the background graphics came throught that didn't come up on my IBM - but then when going thru the tutorial, I get the infamous "Cheshire Cat" grinning head and the background map is mostly black...
So I did the following:
- Reduced graphics settings to "low" - no change
- Ran the 3D analyze program... no avail...
- Changed the XML "map" setting mentioned on another thread to "1" - no joy
So, basically, no joy.
Anyone and everyone is welcome to chime in with similar stories of having Civ in your hands and the cruel and unusual punishment of not being able to play it...
If there is anyone one out there with similar specs / no T&L and have successfully navigated / tweaked their computer to run - please post here...
Also, I'm wondering whether I should bother investing in addition RAM (upping to 1GB on my Sony) but before I do, it would be nice to get some feedback on whether that will be a waste of money.
THAT SAID,
People who want to come in here and tell us: "Get a new computer" well, thanks, we already know that is the ultimate drastic solution - but if we can collectively come together to try and resolve this without shelling out $$$ (e.g. my computers are perfect for what I need for now - one desktop replacement and one travel laptop) I'd just as soon try and do everything possible to try and get Civ to run on one of my laptops
That's what forums are for aren't they - helping each other out, right?...
For those of you who have it up and running - congrats and enjoy.
