The Old Black Map Problem

So, I admit from the start that my video card is not up to spec... BUT before you all jump up and down and say that's the problem hear me out.

I had the EXACT same problem with Civilization IV that I am now experiencing with Colonization. I tried several fixes, and none of them worked for Civ IV. HOWEVER, when the patch for Civ IV was released, lo and behold, my problem was solved and the game now works perfectly.

I had thought that they would have been smart in designing this game and worked in the fixes that they included in the patch for Civ IV, but apparently not.

I get the "floating eyes" for leaders (except for the English and one Spanish leader) and the map is black and white with no graphic detail.

I suppose I just have to wait for a patch to be released to solve this problem?

I have a "black map" problem but mine is much simpler; I can't see any water, at all. It just appears as black nothing that my boats float in, and it shows up as black nothing on the minimap, too. Other than this, my game runs fine, with all other graphics working correctly. Any ideas on how to fix it?

i have exactly the same problem as delphi15, and had exactly the same problem on civIV until the patch.

I bought a new graphics card. The drivers that came with it were not really old, but on one game, the graphics were all messed up - black and white and basically not right, when my old graphic card was playing the game fine. It was not Colonization, but I downloaded a slightly newer version of the graphic drivers and it fixed everything in the game. Most games were playing fine except for this other game I had where the graphics were just wrong. The drivers did fix the problem.

And now I am happy. I did not think that graphic card drivers could do something like that, but they can. Perhaps you might check into that, depending on what graphics card you have. Mine is a Geforce both the old and the new one. However the drivers that came with the new card was messing up the graphics of the game. Now with the other drivers I just downloaded, everything is working like my old graphics card was working.
