The Olympic Games?

They are important because they make BILLIONS of dollars. Bottom line. If they weren't so profitable to so many mega-corporations, you'd be reading about them on page 15 of your daily news stuck between editorials. And that applies to gold medal winners especially. Nike has very deep pockets, and sponsored winners move merchandise. I lived in Atlanta for the '96 games. It was a very crass, commercial atmosphere. I don't see that changing anytime soon. :(

I was in Salt Lake City for the 2002 Olympic games, and you're right. It was a very commercial atmosphere.

Sir Bugsy... the world hasn't suddenly broken out in peace because of the Athens games.
When they played the ancient games, peace did break out amongst the Greek City-states. And even now we see peace gestures. Israel allowed the safe passage of Palestinian athletes.

But they're still at war... safe passage or not. Some Palestinian athletes made it to the Athens games thanks to Isreali soldiers not killing them but nothing actually changes in regards to this conflict in any meaningful way mate.

what about the World Cup its bigger than the Olympics? and i don't think that themost powerful country should win the olympics, look at Australia. 20 million people and still kicking butt.

In Greece it was wars were stopped for the olympics but now its the olympics are stopped for wars (such as in 1916 WW1, and 1940, 1944 WW2)

You think the Nazis really cared about the Olympics? :p

The Nazis would have cared about the Olympics if there was any chance of a German/Aryan winning every event. They lost interest after Jessie Owen (Black American) won several gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics

And hear comes Spearman Francois LaBec , the French competitor in the tank jousting event...
He moves into position, sizes up the target.
This year they're using the M1-A1, a step up from last years competition with the Panzer IVs.
Now Francois looks quite ready, he moves in and he's up....
Exelent form there, the judges will reward him for that,
and he's lodged his spear in the cooling vent! A rather inovative approach, not tried since the 1880 Summer games, where Geman spearman Haz Lichtenstein took the gold by skillfully dissableing a Centurion Battle tank...
A risky move, let's see it it'll work...
:spear:

And he's done it!
An exelent performance from LaBec, let's see if the judges agree...
:goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:
And It looks like LaBec is a shoe-in for this years gold.

i dont support this idea, why?
answer: The olympic games is actually a greek ''party'' 2 show there worship 2 Zeus and these modern games r not anything like the acient games, because in the modern games a english man said: ''the important is not 2 win but 2 be in the games''
and in the ancient greece the important thing actually was 2 win.
but then baron de coubertin took theese word and maked it to the ''slogan'' of the olympic games. he would make just like the acient greek olympics.
he didnt thats all wat id have 2 say.

And if the olymics hadn't been altered when they were revived, it would still be an all-male copetition, and only Greeks would be allowerd to compete, and they'd all be NUDE
How's that gonna effect TV Ratings?

I love the idea. I would be in agreement with it being an ancient wonder and the idea that noone can attack during the games is a very good one and mintyfreshdeath's other ideas
