"Is This It", the debut album by the Strokes. It's a great album, but slightly derivative. Brilliant, hook-filled proto-punk reminicent of the great New York Scene bands in the 70s, one of the best and most fruitful periods in musical history. They've been hyped up enormously by the press, but look behind the hype and they're still pretty damn brilliant, though perhaps not the "saviours of rock" they've been made out as. "Is This It" may only be 30 minutes long and shoddily produced, but it certainly contains the sort of raunchy, memorable songs I had come to expect. It's on a semi-permanent spot in my stereo right now...

Not my record of the year, though. That title goes to "Citizen Bird" by Silverbullit.
