Well first post on the forum, so lets see how it goes...

I was wondering if anybody has any tips for playing as China on Regent? i seem to be finding it difficult to build up my armys, while at the same time building up my culture to prevent conversions, and all that happens is i dont get any form of a decent army intill the late modern ages anybody know what i should do?

Ahh and one more thing a pretty noob question but ive never encountered this before my Capital Beijing has about 4 population yet the number is in yellow and beijing is not growing is this due to lack of food?? as beijing is brining in 8.

Any advice is greatly apreciated

Yes, Beijing doesn't have enough food. Each citizen eats two, and you have four. That means you can't grow.

I suggest you get to know the basic game mechanics. I can't give you any advice from what you wrote other than to forget about culture. A screenshot would help...

EDIT: Welcome to CFC!

As for your general points on playing at Regent... post a save and/or screen shots, there are loads of people round here who'll analyse them to death!

It is also highly recommended to go and read the War Academy.

As for your specific point... each citizen requires 2 food to support it, so a size 4 city requires 8 food, with any surplus going towards city growth.

Neil.

[Edit: darn, beaten....]

Generally speaking Reagent requires you to be much more aggresive and focused. Being a builder is a fine strat, so is being a war monger. It's just very hard to do both at Reagent. Tomoyo is right; think of it this way - with no neighbors you will have no flips and less need for culture. Minimize your time spent building culture, build a big army and eliminate the compitition.

I'd also say that you need to develop your countryside more (w/only 8 food). China has a big advantage with Industrious, but make sure you have enough workers. Also check out Cracker's excellent article on early city tile development:

Good luck!

Sounds like a contradiction.

Thanks for the advice I found the topics recomended very helpful, and have been able to distinquish that the problem at beijing was that i was still under the starting government so the irrigation on the grassland was'nt actually making a difference, as for the culture and army problem i have decided to focus on the army as why should i build things such as wonders when i can just take them with a decent enough army? (the wonder addiction topic brought this to my attention)

anyway i appreciate the advice

How so? You'll have no flips if you have no neighbors, and you'll have no neighbors if you kill them all; therefore, :ar15:kill them all. Sounds good to me.

Why spending a lot of gold and resources on a big army if you
have no neighbors?
