Has anybody ever won a deity game without building or capturing (I reckon destroying is OK)ANY wonders? I should think that would be harder than an OCC game. maybe some of the elite players here can comment.

I have played a few games where I never built any wonders, I just captured the ones I wanted. I only played 1 or 2 where I didn't get any of the wonders. It is not really that hard.

In my games I just played an isolatioist with about 12-15 cities. This was actually before I used trade routes so I didn't even build caravans or freight until I was making the spaceship.

It would be more difficult if someone did that without building the spaceship. They would have to poison the water supply of the cities first then destroy them. Plus things would go much slower since everything would have to be done the hard way (building cathedrals in all the cities, etc). But it would be very possible.

Now, an OCC with no wonders would be an ultimate challenge.

I never became a Civ II virtuoso, but I did attain one accomplishment against the deity AI: I restricted myself to five cities, built no wonders with the exception of the Apollo program, and reached Alpha Centauri - before the last turn of the century...

Of course, it could all be attributed to luck.

Hey Duke, After reading the topic, I was about to make a post that it is possible to play an OCC game without wonders, except Apollo. If you play a standard OCC, a spaceship is required, so there is a no-wonders OCC... but the exception is that you are allowed to build the Apollo program, since that is required to lauch the space age.

Now what I have not seen (and not even considered actually attempting) is a Size 4 or a Size 1 "No Wonders" OCC . BTW, since OCC games are done at deity, an easier level can't be used as a crutch.

For Non-OCC games ("regular" games), it is much more difficult, but definitely playable, if you never build a wonder.

You might try the variation that forbids you to ever build or control a wonder. That's a challenge, and takes planning if you play a normal 100-150 city expansion game. Growth is slower, and lots of resources are wasted that wonders can save. When you see the yearly bill for 200 cathedrals, it sure makes you appreciate MC!!

Actually this is fairly easy.Maybe easy isn't the right word.Fairly do-able.Its a classic MP plan.Wonders will actually slow you down!

Lots of trade and perfectionist cities can generate over 200 beakers per city.Trade bonus will be very significant for any city.Even internal trading can bring in bonus of 200+.Its an old plan but Markus F first took some time to right it down with a few of his own innovations.Super Growth Strategy iirc.

now for a challenge.
1.do nothing till 1 ad.I mean nothing.Just press space and enter.
2.size 1 occ in despotism all game.

extra challenge
conquer world with said city after launch..if you make it that far

extra extra challenge
play it at deity +5

Now Smash, I think I'll wait until I read your timeline of your challenge .

Maybe someone would like to try a Size one OCC, no wonder (except Apollo), no city improvement game? (Smash!) I'd even allow the player to begin normal movement in 4000 BC, LOL...

A long time ago, I did a no-wonder game. This was before I even knew about the internet forums. At the time, I was not a stong advocate of Democracy or trade, though I did use both. Communism was my favorite at the time, and was my primary gov't. I recall that I had very large yearly tax bills, and that put a bind on my science (I had no SSC back then) because my tax levels were 10 and 20% higher than usual.

BTW Smash, have you ever played a size one OCC game before? I've never tried it, but read that someone has... I think I saw his timeline at Apolyton several months ago.

not yet.I did the size 4 and found it kinda tedious for an OCC game.Did it with no wonders(normal size city) and that was somewhat challenging.
It has been done size 1 with a fairly decent landing date.
