I'm kinda hoping that the pic I've attached actually works here but I hope so. anyway, here's the story-

I'm massing my fleet to launch an sea invasion of the Franco/Russian mainland. anyway, in order to protect my fleet of transports I've moved more or less all my airforce and surface fleet to prepare for the invasion, but this has left some of my smaller colonies on islands pretty vurnerable. and the French have taken advantage of this by launching a battleship/transport combo at one of my cities. as I don't have the units to defend against the units once they've landed and I don't have the units to take them out I decided to launch a Tactical Nuke I had in the city. I aimed away from my city so that, although the nuke didn't hit the battleship and transport directly, the blast wave wipes them out. and everyone knows about what happens when you use nukes and quite a few people declare war on me. I expected it but what I didn't expect was some alien race to declare war on me as well.

Who or what are the AD?

in all my games i have never seen that.......what happened after?
i hope u dont have to play w/ no enemy, yet the war afects ur citizens happyness

Check your F4 screen, and see if there is a civ called AD. If not, must be a fluke. . .

Funny thing!
As you are in modern age, you have probably contact to all civs in the world...
But if not, maybe the unknown civ's declaration of war has caused this.

I didn't mess with anything. and I've been at war with everyone before and never seen this.

And seeing as everyone hates me. everyone is now at war with me after I launched the nuke.

I have a PBEM game where the guy setting it up screwed up I thought - I am constantly called Emperor. Strangely, my civ is called Emperor, too, and shows on the RIGHT of the F8 screen.......

This is a bug that sometimes occurs on a nuclear launch. Someone reported the same thing over at Apolyton, and I recently had occasion to launch a nuke to see what happened -- I got the exact same thing (the "AD" in my case happened to be the Persians). PTW v1.14, standard rules, no mods (other than graphics mods).

I've also come across this, but it losing my supply of AD, and was triggered by a war cause by a MPP (I think it was the Babs declaring war because I bombed the Americans)
