Things in Civ3 that would make no sense in real life

[OT]What I don't get is why so many people make fun of the French. I'm enrolled in Model United Nations and a lot of people mock France - whenever someone is representing France, people always say: "Haha! 'We surrender'"[/OT]

- That you can clean up pollution to its pre-pollution level (you can't)
- Coastal fortresses that miss so often and that only take away one hitpoint
- Airports can't airflift more than one unit a turn (arggh!)

This thread. . .

what can I add except to say SOMEBODY at whatever company does Civ 4 (if there is any) - hopefully not Firaxis - should have some knowledge of history and military history because no one at Firaxis did.

Civ 3 is one of the worst and most inaccurate simulations of history and warfare ever with wacked out unit values; unrealistic resource rates; bizarre behavior in diplomacy; terrible and simplistic naval warfare, and much more. Individual unit combat, instead of STACK combat, is also unrealistic.

I could list scores of examples going right up to no Quick Response option for a nuclear strike against you. But what's thre point. Firaxis doesn't care.

You're right!

As another example of Civ3's lack of realism, when an archer becomes elite, he gives this little laugh, right? Well, given that Civ3 units actually represent hundreds of people, the game makers would have us believe that there are actually
hundreds of people laughing in perfect chorus
!! How unrealistic is that???

Zouave I did not create this thread with the intention to bash Firaxis or Civ3. I intended to create something humorous. I know Civ3 has its inadequecies that just can't satisfy your high standards, but I do believe that it is still a very solid and enjoyable game.

There re things historically incorrect. Apart from building Leonardo's Workshop way before Leonardo, with the Carthaginians, you get Numidian Mercenaries. But, the Numidians were allies of Rome, AGAINST Carthago.

You can build a global network of planes, tanks, and battleships without ever knowing "Navigation". I guess they never get lost.

Religous civ can switch between communist and democratic back and forth, forth and back pretty easily. I thought a communist is meant to not believe in religions.

i havent got this game yet :( (but its on order at amazon, it will come about the 10th of feb) so i cant really post any inconsistances but it looks a great game.

and lz14, i didnt know about communism not beliving in a religion i know it is a great idea from a very clever man, karl marks, and idealy is to share everything out so instead of having one rich guy who has so much money he dont know what to do and 100 poor guys who can hardly scrape together enough for a cup of tea, its all shared out so they are equal.

an instead of one rich guy owning a factory its owned by the people so eveyone gets a share in the profits.

the problem comes that even though a great idea (hated by the west...i.e the rich goverments and such but did any1 ask the poor people - i doubt it) its not really ever been succesful in any country (apart from civ 3 I've heard!!!!):goodjob:

Mao's face is too slim! The Russian Cossacks didn't wear hats like that! Why is the gold in the mountains so visible? The chopping noise of a worker clearing a forest is all wrong....
Admittidly I get pissed of when something hapens like a battleship attacks a galleon and loses 2 hit points, but most of the other stuff are minor details that don't impact on the outcome of the game.
Hopefully The makers of civ 4 are paying attention to all the points raise on the forum and it will be the ultimate!

-Wine (Alcohol) makes the arabs happy.
I'm serious about this point. Would it be a idea that some cultures would profit more from one luxury than others?

Kinniken,

dominated by either France or Germany, or even by both of them together

Not everyone agrees with that...

Henry X,

I'll start a new trhead about the fun names for different civs. ;)

I know, especialy since for a long time France and Germany did dominate the EU. But what was possible in a EU of 6 or even 12 members no longer works today. Just consider the franco-german failure to lead the EU in opposing war in Irak, or its failure to impose their "deal" on EU constitutional reforms.
I'm not saying that they do not have a lot of political clout, especialy when they work together, but it's no longer enough. The letter to europeans newspapers signed by 8 EU members or applicant countries (the UK, Italy and Spain in particular) reaffirming their support to the US was a sharp reminder of that.[/OT]

An other serious impossibility: any non-mounted unit (except a few UU) travel just as fast though mountains as thouh level ground... and that's a big one. It basicly mean that provided you are not attacking with mounted troops, mountains are not an obstacle!

Ooooooooo!!! I got a senseless thing I bet NOBODY has heard before!!!
Okay, get ready, hear it goes:

A spearman can take out a tank

He just walks and starts striking with his spear into the tank's armor until it's turned into garbage.
Note you never mentioned the tank had a crew. You just said a spearman (a guy with a spear and some sort of breastplate) can take out a tank.

The inconsistency comes out from "BUILDING" units instead of "TRAINING" soldiers and "MANUFACTURING" weapons...

Keep civilized

In reality, if, while standing guard in a jungle I began to feel ill, I would go to the doctor rather than simply stay put and die.

The Japanese soldiers at Guadalcanal didn't go to the doctor. They stayed and got sick and died. Finally the few survivors were ordered to withdraw.

Hi Welts, I'm pretty sure communist thinks religion as not scientific, so they don't believe any. Good to see you like communism, the game has treated communism rationally.

Back to topic. communist government work rate is 100%, same as monarcy. Well if that's true, how can the Soviet beat Nazis when nobody can, and they catch US when nobody can. It's not only because they had police and less war weariness.

The game has treated communism rationally, but most players would treat it just as a viable war-time government with forced labor, probably not what Marx and Engles really had in mind.

Too much luck. I'll find that a 1hp infantry can knock down and luckily out if it's lucky. That's not very good. A seriously injured infanty IMO couldn't do that.

Also there seems to be a conspiracy - every time I'm hanging on to the edge of my seat an infantry will seem to feed on that and take my veteran unit and knock it down 2hp.
