Has anyone ever modeled some of the submarines built by Simon Lake in competition with John Holland that had wheels, a compartment for a diver to leave the boat, and were more intended for underwater work and exploration that for use as a warship?

I suspect the closest you'll find is Orthanc's old "Paddle Barrel," which I'd be happy to re-u/l.

Best,
Oz

You mean more like this? ;)

Odd how threads can take off in unexpected directions. If I remember the cover correctly, the first barrel had the top part of a space suit attached for the pilot, with an external levers for thrust and vector control, then a string of beer barrels tied together with steel rods, and a rocket nozzle on the last barrel, and about a dozen barrels. It was a great, but quite offbeat, story.

Note: I would love to see one of our outstanding modelers try to make one of these. Great for "steampunk" space exploration.

Going back to the original idea of the thread, I will get on one of my other laptops and post some copyright-free images of a couple of the early Lake submarines for our modelers to play with.

This is an image of a submarine designed by William Hovgaard in 1887, using the technology of the time. Hovgaard was a naval architect, and was heavily used by the US Navy during the World War 1 period. The image is copyright free, being sourced from a book published in 1916. I am not sure if Delta could put one of these together for either the Steam Punk people or Oz's Eemian World mod.

@ timerover51

Are you able to help me with flavors in my mod when I finish it?

I can do good texturing in Blender and I know Delta is using this software for modeling.

I am not that great on flavors, but I am always willing to help with a mod. Send me a PM and let me know what you are thinking.

Hovgaard designed the boat using very conservative methods to be good down to 300 feet. Based on his specifications, it should have been good down to 600 feet with a 50% safety margin. And this was in 1887. Have at it Steampunk and Oz.

Ok, fine then. I didn't finish my mod yet and I don't know how log this will take. I will get back to this when beta version be uploaded.

Here is what I think of. I know nothing about flavors.

In my Early Iron Era all my AI nations always choose only one path at the beginning Literature>Education>Astronomy. I want to set flavors in a way that some of my AI nations will strait away go to Monarchy>Rhetoric and some others to Hard Iron>Mechanism and path Literature>Education>Astronomy will be use only by few of them not all.

Do you think you can do that?

Oh, I forgot... Philosophy with great wonder giving two free advances should be considered as a first option for all civs before they even to start to develop in own way.

For the other eras I don't know yet how to set up everything. Maybe I won't need anything.

Er.... Reg, haven't you noticed there's a convenient thread just next-door in this same subforum? I am pretty sure the flavor question could be best probed in that other thread.

Back to topic, is the submarine going to be covered with wooden barrell panels on the body? Maybe I will go ahead with the small sub from Orthac for my mod. I'm pretty curious about how this sub will turn out. :)
