Third UHV as Venice

Hi everyone,

recently took the Civ 4 Complete box out of the shelf. Played it a little when it came out, but due to reasons (marriage) I had put it back and didn't bother until recently. After playing a bit in the normal game a I discovered Rhye's and Fall of Civilization. Oh my, that is just SO much better than the vanilla game.

That said, after playing almost all nations I discovered RFC Europe and I'm hooked! Thanks everybody who created / maintained this awesome awesome mod!

I recently started a new game as Venice. Great fun! On my second attempt, I managed to fulfill the first two UHVs. The third UHV is being the first to build a colony. That's what I'm unsure on how to manage. Since Venice doesn't get any access to the Atlantic, does it mean I need to go ahistorical and conquer a port town in Portugal or Spain in order to build a colony?

Any advice for me? Thanks in advance!

Exactly. Or you can vassal someone who will be in control of an Atlantic Access Ressource, gift them Astronomy, send a workboat, and demand their ressource.

Thanks for the welcome, El Bogus and thanks for confirming my suspicion. I guess a late game expansion to Iberia is in order then. I had dropped my Venice game when I ran into this as it felt too "gamey" to go and conquer Portugal but I guess I'll try again then.

Typically the third UHV represents a 'reach goal' for a given civ, something that it did *not* historically accomplish but which represents a culmination of its real-world efforts. So Morocco defeating Spain and Portugal never happened, but is still the 'historical victory' condition for Morocco. For Venice, a major seafaring commercial empire, it makes sense that its historical victory would involve overseas colonies, even if that requires slightly ahistorical behavior (though not really, because Venice did conquer, for instance, Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade to ensure access to the Black Sea and Middle East; conquest for trade access is entirely in-character for the civ).
