That makes you bilingual or something, nice. As to me I nearly can't understand oral speech (although I might improve slowly, I'm not sure), I mean talked english, and i can understand only wrote english when it's on of the level of oral speech, like in this forum. Even some book like Harry Potter is way to literary for me. I even struggle to understand french lyrics sometimes, or badly sounded films where the actors don't articulate well enough to my taste. (I even rate badly some movies just because I don't understand what is said, fortunately it's pretty rare.) I don't know I must have some kind of problem with that. (like being "slow" or something)

O well, I've seen some interviews on TV in UK where they would subtitle Scottish folks speaking so-called English with a very thick accent (something like Robert the Bruce?). Granted we do have some very different accents in France, but I've never seen an interview of a person from the East or the South being subtitled. Peaky Blinders is a good series to listen to, to practice your Northern accent...

Ha! This misconception is very popular, I accept. In UK, Londoners themselves need constant reminding that not everyone north of the m25 is classed as a "northener"!

I've always heard it said that Roland Rat, Coronation Street were set "up North", so there you go!

Just the same in France: Parisians need constant reminding that not everyone outside the Périphérique lives in the sticks.
