I thought RAM was supposed to be cheap?? I just checked some of the ads in todays paper and one ad had a 512mb stick for $370 and that was on sale. I was thinking 50-100 for 512mb stick nearly $400 is not cheap.

Search around online. Also, RAM for a laptop is usually more expensive than RAM for a desktop.

It was for a desktop and it was from Dell.

Just look around online then. If you spend a little time to shop around, you can find RAM pretty cheap these days.

It's Friday afternoon and I think a lot of folks are just counting down the time until they can go home for the day to play Civ4. ;)

It will run fine. Just make sure they have the same FSB (Front Side Bus) or whatever you call the speed of the RAM in English.

And it should be the same type... match SDRam with SDRam, or DDR with DDR.

Hm... yeah. I dont have my Copy yet. But ill get in in an hour or so. I was hesitating because of the Ati Graphics Card Problems - since I have one.

Also note: you need to know what you're looking for. RAM isn't just measured by its size: it can be low-latency, high-reliability, high-cycle, error-checking, and a variety of other options. Each of these options will dramatically increase the cost of the RAM without giving you a significant benefit (specialized RAM is generally used in specialized systems). Don't buy something you don't need.

There are plenty of good RAM-buying guides on the Net; try checking some of the better-respected manufacturers (Crucial, Kingston, etc.) for info on what's right for you.

EDIT: if you're not certain the RAM you're buying will work with your computer, CALL OR E-MAIL THE MANUFACTURER! They will walk you through figuring out the specifications of your system, and give you a list of the RAM modules that are compatible with it. Then just figure out how much you want to spend, and you're set.

Ok well this may be a stupid question but im not really knowlegable about computers so how do I find out what my comp has SDR or DDR also whats the diffrence?

Difference - I dont know either.

How to find out? Check your Dell receit - or call them. They will tell you.

Crucial has always been very easy to buy from. Their website was able to direct me to the exact type of RAM I would need.

Check that site. It will tell you the type you need. Nobody says you have to buy it there ;)

ya im in that site right now seems to be very helpful cause it doesnt just asume Im a computer wizard lol it explains things for you thnks alot for posting that.

Chopperhead: tell me the model of dell and I will pick out compatible ram for it, for you.

it's a dell dimension 4600

I have an older Dell (Dimension 8100), and it uses RDRAM. RDRAM is far more expensive than the standard RAM that comes with most computers. On Ebay 512 mb of RDRAM isn't exactly $400, but it is around $120, which is still a heck of a lot for RAM.
