tile overlap of cities...

In the early game your objective should be to acquire and work as many special resources as possible. Neither overlap nor unused space is particularly relevant.

Played with Lizzy (Financial) over the weekend and overlaped like crazy to work all the the coast tiles possible. I see the benefits now!!!

I had an obsession with avoiding tile overlaps in CivIII, which I have fortunately overcome since then. Cities rarely seem to make it to the point where they're using all their tiles (particularly at higher diff. levels), so strategic placement/concentration on reaching certain (combinations of) tiles is more important.

cottage citys is preaty easy to find. it's importent to have alteast some kinde of food, one food plain can be enough, even a farmed river grasland can be enough if many squares is grasland. as long as they suport them self with food ther isen't going to be a problem. it will take a while for them to grow though so slove building libary and stuf will take a while. her's a screenshot from a resent game, i'm glad i buit it. after biology it became a decent hybrid nothing spectacular.

the same things comes with early procuction citys, those will not contain so many cottages they will later end up slow build ships and outhers so not that bad realy. it's importent for the economy not to build to many small PC's though.

just take a look at the lanscape i had when building. I was in a need of science citys and this spot was the best. after this i always try to find spots like this, in the end they will contibute with something.
