Time to Upgrade!

Okay, guys. We are now able to build Pikemen.

We currently have 15 Spearmen in cities with Barracks.

Unfortunately, we cannot do a mass-upgrade, so if we upgrade, we have to defortify the troops there. (Good news is that this time, there would be no appreciable change in Defense.)

I have 4 issues to take to the People:

1. What Ranks should be upgraded?
Currently, we have 7 Vets and 8 Regulars. I am definitely in favor of getting Vets to Upgrade, but am undecided on whether the Regs are worth the cost...

2. Which Provinces should get upgraded?
With the threats mainly in South and East, getting upgrades to there would seem the priority. But that might leave Capital and North exposed to flanking, or a Zulu intervention...

3. Which of the 2 issues above gets Priority?
Go with Ranks? Or upgrade in Troubled Areas?

4. How much Gold should we retain, if any?
Self explanitory, but I wouldn't want to keep more than 50. Or less than 20, but the latter is my personal preference...

EDIT: List that I also put in the Domestic Thread...

Barracks are at the following Cities (with Garrissons):
Fanatikku (1 Vet, 1 Reg) [Z]
Furuyama [Z]
Immo (1 Vet) [Z]
Epolenep (2 Vets, 1 Reg)
Zojoji (1 Vet) [Z]
Odawara (2 Reg) [E]
Shorin-Ryu (1 Vet, 1 Reg) [E]
Regent Town (1 Vet, 1 Reg) [E]
Corrino (1 Reg) [E]
En'Gha (1 Reg) [E]

Discuss.

One more thing... We can rush walls at Eridu (to be renamed) for 20 Gold. Given that the Babs are bypassing Epolenep, it seems clear to me that Eridu is their actual objective.

We need to upgrade the units near where the bab bowmen are and are headed.

I only thought of this as you were posting, Chieftess... It seems clear to me that the Babs wish to reclaim their lost city. Perhaps the rushing of Walls there is in order, since Eridu has neither Spears nor Barracks.

The Babs don't want their lost city. Who wants an enclave in enemy territory, especially when all it is is a patch of desert. My bet is they want Manchai, which is right next to them, has two strategic resources, and could be captured and kept very easily. They probably also want those gems. But I am sure they don't give a damn about Eridu.

An AI who wants saltpeter or oil?

Epi, look at the positioning of the troops. They're, for the most part, going around East of Epolenep. If their target was Manchai, they'd be going West...

Wait a sec... those guys aren't going towards Eridu... they're after the Single Sworded Furuyama! Get Zarn on the line! Make a Pike there, Pronto!

Hmmmm we could move the swordsman 1SW. If the bowman attacks - across hill and river against a vet our chances have gotta be good. We could then move it in line to tempt the next bowman, and so on, recovering as necessary?
(edit: you know you've been playing too much civ when you go to click on that picture above and it doesn't work - you can't tell how many turns the worker on the mountain has left!)
(edit again: why on earth are building a worker in a city that is finished it and isn't going to grow for another 5 turns?)

Of course, as deputy interim governor of Hairando, and either deputy or governor of Hairando next term, WE NEED MORE UNITS!! They will be in build queues, but you can't expect manchai who has 1 or 2 shields per turn to be able to live by itself. We need help from other cities - And if they pillage that road, then we are disconected for a while. First get the units out of our territory, then attack. (Btw, who controls workers (northeast of Manchai needs to be moved).

And have the sword that is on the hill W or Eridu move onto the hill road and fortify. If they attack, we'll win, or have greater chances.

We can send Pikes from East too. But i think Bowmans can't hurt our Pikes.

There is a possibility to make peace with Babs (since we have alliance with Iroquies only versus Romans), we could get their gold, map and maybe something else.
That would left us only with 1 oponent - Rome - who obviously can't defend much longer. **Notice that Iroquies conquered Cumae which is very close to Rome. Rome is probably under direct attack from Iros army.
We should sign peace with Babs (we didn't plan war vs them anyway + they will ruin their reputation) and clear the Roman resistance.
Then we should consider Samurai payback to Babs.

You are right Invy, those Babs are all over our southern frontier, better make peace as they could concievably take a few cities from us. Something tells me they are probably not in the greatest mood for talking though.

Hope for Peace, but Plan for War.

Let's get back to the main discussion:

What to upgrade, and where?
Shall we Rush Eridu's Walls?
And how much of a Gold reserve do we want?

I think we should upgrade all of our frontiner Pikemen first. Better defenses from the outside in.

Rush walls. Very cheap and useful.
Upgrade all frontier Pikes.
Spend all gold we need.

We can lower science to 0% for 1 turn (sacrifice research) and get 59 gold (at the moment) if we need money badly.
Security > gold :).

well its pretty simple, upgrade all vet spears on the outside border and then go from there, if anytown is in immediate threat also upgrade those
