Tips/guide to tech trading?

--If you play with no-tech trading, AI delay researching Alphabet tech for many many turns. Ai got some logic sometimes too :D
 
Something I learned a long time ago the hard way:

the AI doesn't like trading techs that allow the construction of wonders, but if a wonder requires two techs, and the AI only has one, it'll do the trade. Thus if the AI has Sailing but not Masonry, it'll happily trade Sailing - but if you trade it Masonry beforehand, it will then refuse to trade Sailing because it can now built the Great Lighthouse.
They only refuse to trade it if they are currently building the wonder ("we have our reasons"). This is a good way to find out if an AI has already started building a wonder.
 
Before trading techs check if the AI is the worst enemy of others.
The penalty isn't permanent, but it takes a very long time to go away.
 
^ this is actually really important. If you're neutral in a religious Cold War, it's very easy to find yourself getting Maths for Currency from the Buddhists and then finding the Hindus have withdrawn their willingness to trade you Monarchy and Compass. And if one of them is Montezuma... whoops.
 
It’s a good idea to check the tech trade screen after a wonder is completed. Several AIs may have failgold which can be swapped for your old techs.
