Tips on building armies?

I was wondering how you gain great armies in the game. The last game i played I only had 2 on eof which I gainmed from battle, the other I built at a city late in the game.

Try and keep your elite units alive, and fight battles with them you have a good chance of winning, so enough you should get a great leader. Use him to build an army, then win with that army. Now you should be able to build the military acadamy small wonder which allows you to build empty armys, but they are expensive.

I tend to use the first leader to build an army so I can build more armys, then use any more I get to rush wonders.

I seem to always get a leaderif I whipe out a civ with an elite unit, you get to name the unit too.
