ToE: which techs will you get?

Here's another question: which techs will you get upon finishing ToE? Is it the one you're currently researching ànd the one you've put next in line? Or is another mechanism at stake?
I'm playing Vanilla, btw (just in case that it's a different mechanism in PTW or Conquest)

The one you're currently working and whichever tech you choose to go after next. That's why it's important to time the ToE so that you get it on the same turn as you finish researching a tech, so you get two completely free techs, without throwing away any beakers.

^^Yep me too. I read it somewhere in the War Academy. As soon as you can not research another tech before ToE is built set the science slider to 0% and make all your scientists into taxmen. Now you pick Atomic Theory, boom, next Electronics, boom again, you just did a slingshot to Hoover Dam and got two very expensive techs for free. If you can time this with a pre-build for Hoover, ;) nice.

Sometimes, I get Atomic Theory and Electronics. Other times, I get Refining and Combustion (Mass Production if I have Refining) if I haven't started a prebuild for Hoover's yet and have Steel. The flexibility is nice since I like Tanks a lot. Much more than Cavalry anyway. They just don't belong in the IA after Infantry come. (Of course, they're only usable because artillery exist).

Usually Atomic Theory and Electronics.
In a low-level spaceship game, however, I'll use it for Modern Age techs.

Same as Bartleby. In a SS game (done this up to Emp) with enough Sci civs and being Sci yourself, use the ToE sling, your free tech, and trading to get up to 7 Modern techs the turn you enter. Switch your prebuild for immediate Internet, and possibly some for immediate Nuke Plants (if you're lucky).

Might be about to make myself look stupid, but...

I'm pretty sure in vanilla it gave you whatever you were currently researching and then whatever was cheapest. (Generally, I'd end up with espionage or communism as the second one)

I had a similar experience. I always try to go for Atomic Theory and Electronics. But in a previous game, I ended up with Atomic and Communism, even though I had B-lined for Electronics. :(
In my last game, upon finishin ToE I got Atomic and then a messagebox appeared telling me that I had already learned Replaceable Parts from the Chinese, and asking me which tech I wanted to get instead. This indicates that the game wanted to give me a free Replaceable instead of Elektronics, right?

Has anyone experienced similar failures to get Electronics?

In Vanilla 1.29f you get whatever you are researching and what you choose to research next. Right?

You can choose what you research next. When you get a tech from TOE (which is what you're currently researching) the science adviser asks you to pick your next tech.

That sounds like exactly what used to happen to me. Do you have the latest patch? It seems like that might change it to the much more useful version in conquests

I have the 1.29f patch for Vanilla installed. But maybe I didn't have the patch yet in the game where I got Communism instead of Electronics. I'm not sure. It would explain a lot though.
Thanks everyone for your comments!
