the last game I played of this series was Civ 2 and one of the aspects I liked was that it took an effort to find other civs on the large map. I just stared a game on a the large "earth" map, 10 civs and 20 city sates, on prince difficulty. I can't go five tiles without running into a city state and/or civ. I have little of the map uncovered and I am surrounded by other cultures . I realize that this is historical but I though that playing on the huge map would allow me time to just build up my civ and then go looking for others! Any suggestions on what I might do to make the area where my culture is located a lot less cluttered but still have to worry about other potential superpowers in the world?

There's not much you can do except reduce the number of civs and city states for the same map size, or I think there's some mods that allow for larger map sizes (but don't quote me on it). :)

If you create a "set up" game, you can show advanced options which let you change the number of city states. Maybe that would help you?

Also, the Terra map is extra-crowded, as all civs start in the "Old World".
So, basically, half of the map is unused at start, and everything is crowded in the other half.
