Too Crowded

Hello,

I just bought the vanilla Civ3 CD. It only came with the CD, so I do not have a manual. I keep running into this problem where my capital goes crazy and the people complain that it is too crowded. How do I avoid this? Am I just not building enough cities or is it something else?

Thanks

When your citizens complain that it's too crowded, it really means that they are just unhappy. Depending on what difficulty level you're playing, there are only just so many new citizens born content. It ranges (I think) from 4 at Chieftain to only 1 at Emperor and above.

There are several ways to make them happier:

1. Hook up luxeries like dyes and spices. The more different luxes, the more happy citizens.

2. Build "happiness buildings", like temples and cathedrals.

3. Hire specialists by turning your citizens into entertainers, tax collectors and scientists.

4. Use the luxery slider found with the "F1" key. It allocates some of your gold to providing happiness, and it's usually the best thing to do early in the game.

If you have 3 or more different types of luxes, build a marketplace which increases the number of citizens made happy by each lux (but only after you have at least 3.)

Good luck and happy civing!!! :)

And you do have a manual. Look for a 'Manual' folder on your CD. There will be a .pdf of the manual there.

Emphasis added to this... because it's worth repeating. A lot of new players don't fully appreciate the power of marketplaces. Markets do two important things for you:
  1. Increase happiness from luxuries.
  2. Increase commerce, which allows you to afford more science/luxury tax/whatever you need gold for...
Good luck!
