In the early turns of a game, looking at the top 5 cities screen often reveals their origin, i.e. civs we haven't even heard of.
I don't know whether this is intended, but this looks like a spoiler to me. It would be, imho, more interesting to figure only cities belonging to known civs. The other ones should remain hidden until the first contact.
