I've just bought Test of Time and have a problem with saved games. I can start a game alright and play it and save it. However, when i reload a saved game the map loads up using Civ2 Classic terrain, unit and city graphics with a lot of screen corruption in between each tile. Also various tiles have things like 'Ocean', 'Hills' written on them.
Also to reload a game i have to restart the whole game otherwise it crashes with an illegal operation.
I have tried the V1.1 patch- it didnt help. I have also tried re-installing as well.

I have Windows ME.

Any suggestions?

Someone familiar with ToT scenario design might be able to help.

I don't use ToT, but I believe the crash is caused by a page fault, which is in turn caused by an invalid parameter in a file from the Classic.

A Diety+1 save in 2.42 (Classic) will cause MGE to crash when attempting to load it because of this issue. Something similar seems to be happening to yours. My solution was simply ro run 2.42, via Cedric Greene's great patch to MGE.

Recommendation: Buy 2.42 for $1 to $9 at an auction site or discount store like Target or WalMart. Don't expect ToT to be 100% compatible. :)

Don't listen to starlifter :p ;)
ToT is FAR, FAR superior to the other Civ2 version.

The solution should be very simple: ALWAYS save your savegames in the correct sub-folder. If you're playing an Original game, save your game in the "Original" folder, if you're playing an extended original game, save in the "ExtendedOriginal" folder etc.

You're both saving your games in the main "Test of Time" folder, which makes ToT use the terrain1.gif and terrain2.gif files. These files are in pre-ToT format...
Open up the terrain1.gif from the main folder and the terrain1.bmp from the Original folder in an image editor to see the difference:
- ToT has 3 columns with terrain graphics, and 2 with resource graphics.
- previous Civ2 versions only have 2 columns with terrain graphics.
This difference causes ToT to look all screwed up.

I think it is probably one of the main problems that Windows ME has period. I paly ToT on Windows 98 (my machine is to old for anythingnever) and I have never seen that problem.

Hey on my system i have 98 SE and yeah it works fine! But I can't play TOT on XP, it says i have to have it in 16 bit to run....and i do but the notice keeps coming up then closing it. help!:(

I have 98 SE and have never seen Civ TOT on XP at all so I'm not sure what it is doing, I do know the requirements thing in the manual says 95 or 98 but I know people play it on ME and probably there are people who play on XP but I'm not one of them so I'm not sure, all I can say is keep reseting the settings for the screen in windows and maybe restart the computer wiht the new settings

Yeah, cheers I'll see what i can do

do normal civ2 scenarios work with TOT? or do u need patch to make them work?

There is a program to modify regular scenarios to TOT ones, somewhere in teh download area somewhere, don't rember where off the top of my head, but it doesn't always work, someone on the scenario board could probably tell you where it is though

Any luck Wolf Lord? I installed ToT on my XP (Home Edition) machine without a hitch and have been designing a scenario on it for months. I suspect Merc may be right about the video drivers.

Well, sorry my problem is fixed! I only thought of it yesterday! It wasn't how my system had the colour the .exe file's compatability was to auto run in 256 colours! No problems with the game, just with me!:goodjob:

no problem with the drivers!
