Total Civ3 Newbie- Where to start?!

I don't measure my city spacing by overlap. I measure my city spaces by spaces not overlaped + (1/2) the overlapped space. Ideally, this equals 12. Higher than 12, the city begins to produce one pollution icon for each extra pop point (unless you have mass transit).

I would stay away from the Pyramids because those 400 shields could be used for expansion, and that's the most important thing early on. Besides, if you get beat to the wonder, you're screwed.

If i can add a questio here, why is it that cities over 12 are frowned upon here? Im guessing that here in Civ III land pollution is more of a problem, in that it takes longer to clean up?

Probably the biggest reason is you have to have a hospital, except for a possible wonder city, and that is not going to be worth it in most games.

So it is not so much that they are "frowned upon" as you just do not get around to it. Pollution will become a factor, but not much of one as you will already have factories in some cities and have clean up crews anyway.

Wow. So one game without worrying about Wonders, and my playing speed and growth has gone thru the roof. And a big help too, keeping cities closer. I think Im ready for Regent. (dont laugh :)

And a good idea would be to make sure that you can win on Regent in all the different ways, and different civs, before moving up to Monarch. Winning by spaceship, 100K culture or conquest often require huge differences in strategy.

Personally, I can win sometimes by spaceship on Deity, but would never be able to win by conquest or cultural 100K. I need to perfect this before I truly feel comfortable on Deity.

Best of luck :)
