Hey civ fans, devil here...

So the topic of today is trade post.

When should I get them?

It seems that building a farm or a mine is much better than a trade post.

Maybe when I don't want my city to grow any more a TP is better than a farm?

Or build TPs so that i can switch my citizens to work on them during a golden age?

Thnx in advance...

Mahalo,

I build TPs in puppet cities. After Economics, they become more useful, especially when i have only few riversided tiles, and want to get more income from regular tiles. For riversided tiles, it's usually better to have farms.

u gave the answers imho urself.

but here comes my opinion about them.

are they worth it? of course if u want gold...why you should need it is another question, but there are plenty reasons for gold.

are mines or farms better? production is always nice, but u cant maintain an army without gold, u cant buy city states and so on. farms are in addition only good if u want to growth, but else they just push a bit your research rate, can push your income with monarchy but will more or less reduce your happiness and it will take longer for your golden ages.

i build them if i have problems with happy faces and i have enough production but serious gold problems. also as u said if u hvy focus on early GAs trading posts are more then before necessary if u want to maximize the effect during a GA.

I've started making posts earlier to get upgrade, maintenance cash. Sometimes a gold focused 2nd city. Can really help early war. Also it helps to avoid the medieval cash flow problems when you build a lot of buildings and dont have markets up yet. I'll often tradepost forest tiles, as they can be farmed/ chopped or lumbered as needs change, and a 1 food 1 hammer 1 or 2 gold tile can be the best of both worlds. Needs microing tho.

i found tp's are good on jungle tiles, they will give you gold food and science (after universitys i believe) also one of the policies gives u extra science from trading posts so late game u get around
2 food / 2 gold / 3-4? science. (i can't remember if the tech gives +1 or +2 science from trading post)
