I am rubbish at protecting my reputation, can someone help me?

For example, on my island I cannot trade anything, but on other islands it's fine for SOME nations, but not others.

That is a specific example, but can someone list/explain all the pratfalls I could be making.

If you can be more specific about the problem you're having, you'll probably get specific advice.

Just don't break deal's that have a time on them. You should be fine. Also, don't declare war when you have unit's in a civ's territory, the AI see's that as RoP rape.

Your advisors always consider that whoever you're currently negotiating with has 'betrayed our allies the...' even though those 'friends' might be at war with you.
Always remember that the AI cheats, if you're at war with civ A and with an alliance against civ B, if you attack civ B -or B attacks you- they'll automatically become at peace with A, ànd bring your rep down a lot for 'betraying' them.
