Trade Routes--anyone offering a good explanation?

I just can't seem to make sense out of how trade routes work. Cities appear to get a maximum of four routes, but how are they determined? Some are domestic and some are foreign, what does this depend on? And do the Trade routes make more money over time, or is it the farther away they are, the more cash they bring in?

I guess I can't seem to get my head around this particular concept, although the explanation will likely be simple. Anyone explain trade routes a little?

Edit: never mind, my questions have been answered by another thread. Sorry.

1. trade route is from the start
2. From currency
3. Corporation
4. Free market civic

Larger/richer the town, more money it will make from trade. It also seems like foreign trade routes give _a lot_ more money than domestic. Also harbor gives 50% bonus.

So with 4 trade routes in large town with harbor, I have seen it give 4* 7-9 income, which is very nice :)

Is there any way to control which cities your cities trade with? If foreign trade routes are more valuable than domestic, is there a way to assure you of getting more foreign trade routes?

also important aspect is getting foreign trade is you have to be on the cost or have a road to them, also i think (not 100% sure) that them more friendly you are with them the better deal you get
i one of my games i pissed every one of and all my trade consisted of domestic :)
not very good
so that costal town have a much better chance to get good foreign trade rout (the one that is far away and get more $)
also mercantlism will prevent you from trading
not sure but i think there a wonder that will give you trade rout in all town for ur civ (i might be wrong, dont have the game near me, cant check)

That's exactly the question I was going to ask. I had very lucrative trade routes with all 6 foreign civs, but after delcaring war on Russia I noticed that all my trade routes went DOMESTIC!

At first I thought this was because Russia was between me, China, and Japan which therefore left me no land route to those countries. My costal cities should have still benefitted from foreign trade routes though...

Can anyone else confirm that you may loose foreign trade routes if you're involved in a war with a third party and the other leaders are no longer 'pleased' with you? BTW, I still had resource deals with at least one of these other countries...

Don't forget, you need to get Astronomy to get overseas trade over an ocean. That might seem like a pure sea-faring tech, but it's actually one of the most important economic techs out there.

And that again could have been part of why I lost my foreign trade routes. I had open borders with Russia before our war, but they of course closed when the brawl began. This meant I couldn't get a COASTAL path to some of my foreign buddies since the coastal squares ran through Russian territory...

...So, get ASTRONOMY and open ocean squares, and the lucrative ocean trade routes should open back up...
