Trade with major civs

I seem to be having trouble sending caravans to other civ. Is there a step am not using? Currently playing Portugal and have traded with Beijing and Mecca. I have found everybody, but I cannot send then caravans.

You are probably too far.away. build caravansaries and/or harbors

Also roads. You don't always have to road the whole way, but I have noticed that more distant cities become available after I start building a road in their general direction.
