in my game i have one or more resources, be it strategic, luxury or other is not within my city territory, or city radii, but exists a few tiles south inside of russian land, if we are connected by railroad, is there any way to get access to that square containing the resource without becoming involved with the civ at all?

eccentricity:confused:

if its in someone elses territory, even just 1 square into it, you need to make a trade deal with them to get it

If there is a spot not covered by the Russian border that is right next to the resource, just plop a city right down next to it and it is yours.

If you are connected by rail I imagine you cannot steal it by ploppong a city nearby. So you have 2 choices.

1. Trade for it.
2. Burn the Russians to the ground.:)

In my current game a Scout found a Settler in a goody hut very far from my main early city building efforts. I used it to set up a city on the coast next to some hills & mountains. Then set a Worker to build a road out to that forlorn & forgotten :( city.

With Iron Working, I found I didn't have any in my homeland and the only places I could find it were in the frigging Frogs territory, we weren't too friendly  I start sending my Horsemen army toward the 2 bit tramp and keep hitting F2 hoping some friendly AI will find Iron.

Suddenly, I see Iron in my resources. It's next to the lost city  I look at the lost city closer and see the Worker has finished his road out there. But, in the long time to completion the Russkies have cultured across the road.

Moral: Even a road through an AI culture can connect your cities.

As long as it is a peaceful culture. I would build a harbor in that forgotten city just in case.

You're exactly right. I changed to Harbor as soon as the Iron was found.

The lost city is no longer forgotten & forlorn ;)

Hee hee! Yeah, I panicked when the Russians founded a city directly on my road between "forgotten and forlorn" mining camps and the heart of my empire... I wuz all set to rock&roll with my Legions, then realized the goods were still flowin'...

Moral of the story: Don't Panic! (tm)

:)

If the resource is outside their cultural borders, you can build a road to it and use a worker to put a colony there. Note however that the computer will eventually put a city in the area if nobody owns the territory. It eats the computer up to see unclaimed territory. Also, make sure you put at least one unit there to defend and ideally a fortess also. This only works for stategic or luxury resouces. Best bet: Just build a city down there.
