training vets - impossible?

For the life of me, I do not understand how to convert inexperienced soldiers into vets. I've created schools, upgrades to colleges, and placed veterans in the same town, but despite putting a colonist in the school/college to train him, I don't see a "train vet" (or whatever the label is) option. I do see a list of every other job. What's the problem?

I haven't found any evidence on the net about being able to do this. No one supports the claim that you can train soldiers to be vets; in fact, most of them say it can't be done with this new version of colonization, patch or no patch.

However, my brother (owning the same game) insists that he can train vets and has done so. He's even be able to train natives. He said I could be having trouble because training costs extra money. I don't know if he's right.

Please help.

for the natives you have to establish a mission by having a missionary cant really tell you how your brother trained vets, :/

With the patch installed you can train veteran soldiers, providing you have one working in the colony at the time. They cost the same as elder statesmen. In my last game I finished with 50 vets, almost all of whom I trained myself.

You cannot train converted natives but you can use them as students

No dice. Even if I have a vet in town and put a colonist in the school, there is no option to train him, but I can train him for any other job.

Are you sure you have the patch installed? Check by selecting 'Advanced' from the main menu and then 'About this Build'. The Build Version should be 1.0.0.1 (121000).

Are you playing a mod? Mods may handle education in different ways.

If you have a student in school you can 'mouse over' him and it will tell you how long until graduation and the list of professions available to him. This will reflect the specialists currently working in the colony although it may not show any added that turn. Wait a turn or two and check again.

I'll reload the game and see if I can train up a vet. I heard that it could be because I didn't have enough money. That's the only reason I can think of.

To train a veteran soldier, does that veteran "working in the colony" as you said needs to be "working" in the colony or can he just be in the garrison (Fortified) on guard?

Yes he does have to be actually working in the colony, as a statesman/farmer etc.
