Traits tied to improvements that remain?

In my current game as the Vikings, I've taken around 30 cities ampihibously, and started noticing that I wasn't having problems with harbors being destroyed in the battle, like I have every other game I've played (Germany, mainly). The only thing I can think of to chalk this up to is the seafaring trait. When I started thinking about it, I realized that with militaristic civs, the same thing seems to happen with barracks, though I have no C3C non-militaristic games to compare with. Has anybody else noticed this? Is there anything to it?

Nope, traits have nothing to do with deciding which buildings get destroyed. All cultural improvements (except wonders) get destroyed. The others have a chance of surviving (I think 50/50? That seems a bit too high.).

That's what I always thought, too (50/50 seems high to me, too), but I'm at a loss to explain why I've yet to have to replace a harbor in by now about fifty coastal conquests (probably half or more with harbors).

LOL, if it's simple RNG luck, I've had a run that I should've used in Vegas instead of wasting on civ. I think you misunderstood. I've been conquering EVERY harbor whole, save maybe one or two. It's been a good thing.

I think Aqueducts and Hospitals cannot be destroyed because they are tied in to population limits. Plus, I think they are one of the improvements that cannot be sold.

I think that's right on aqueducts and hospitals. In my other games, I'd say about 25% of the harbors survived. The reason I know this is mainly because one of my favorite gambits is hitting any coastal resource cities, especially luxuries and especially luxuries I'm currently buying from my enemy, in the first turn of combat. In my battle plans, I always note whether there's a harbor there or not, to ship whatever it is back home. Most of the time, whether there is or not before the battle, I wind up having to build one afterward. Marketplaces I'd guess slightly less than 50/50, but I usually don't know if it was destroyed, other than what can be inferred from city size and needs.

You guys are right about the ducts & hospitols, those will never be destroyed(unless you reduce the pop number with arty first).

The reason it's seeming like every city has harbors remaining is twofold: You're getting some really good RNG luck & you're using Zerks, so nearly every city you attack has a harbor in it.

Number one I'll buy to an extent, especially since I seem to be the only one noticing this ;), but number two doesn't wash for several reasons:

1. Most of the cities I've taken have been inland. Vikings are allowed to use other units in conjunction with Berserks, right? ;)
2. The copmarison I was making was coastal cities taken in this game versus coastal cities taken in previous games.
3. My playing as Scandinavia has no bearing on whether the AI builds harbors in its cities or not.

Btw, Ghengis, noticed your avatar. I'm an Auburn grad and looking forward to seeing what our basketball program will do under Jeff Lebo. Here's hoping he's much closer to Dean Smith than Sonny Smith.
