I often find it very unrealistic when I am able to load either four warriors or four tanks or four great leaders (hypothetically) into a transport and they will take up the same amount of space. I would rather like to see a system like this:

Transports will now have transport-capacity-points (TCP's)

Each unit will take up a certain amount of TCP's in the transport, so the transport should be able to carry more warrior units than tank units, for instance.


I think this would make hte game more realistic and also adding another strategic element in naval invasions.

that's a very significant issue...i also agree with your suggestion...
 
I'm sure we will be able to do stuff like that using unit classing via Python scripts. We should be able to:

Assign general Transport Capacity points for units of like eras to control size/number allowed to be transported on a given vessel.

Disallow transport of any later heavier unit on any older sailing ship, or disallow tanks transported on vessels meant as troop transports (vs cargo ships, which would carry tanks, etc.), use flags to control which type of ships amphibous assault may be staged from, and so on.

Control naval air transport to a much more realistic degree, i.e. having separate vessels for full blown naval combat fighter wings, smaller carriers that fly Harriers, Helicopter Assault Ships that transport Marines and Helis, allowed to airdrop Marines a few tiles inland with the helis, etc.

That's just for starters, many more things should be possible.

The question is: would you really want this many more things to take into account every turn? The Civ4 team is faced with the challenge of keeping the game manageable... it'd be easy to create zillions of little diversions that would make each turn an eternity of planning.
 
I think a lot of the suggestions made would be bad for the main game, for the reasons Turtleneck has already given. They could be good for mods, though.

The main idea, of having different units take up different amounts of space on ships, I think is a good one. It should be harder to transport Armor than Infantry.
