See this thread too.

We currently have a 3/3 hoplite in Berlin that can attack a 1/4 archer on a forest. If we do so, we will start our golden age (soon afterwards we can sign peace + start infrastructure). The chances of us wining is 83%! :D Discuss...

PS: I am not sure whose jurisdiction this discussion falls under. Military? In any case...I will let the appropriate person put up a poll when the time comes around.

Guess I'll copy my post over here...

While we clearly can start our GA, let's discuss whether it is a good idea. We are already in a preferred government, so that doesn't provide any reason not to have our GA. The other major potential reason to delay would be if we thought we can eke out some more production either by growing our population more, or by capturing another foreign city.

While a 2nd foreign capture in the near term is unlikely, it certainly is possible that we could manage some more growth prior to triggering our GA. The question for you, the citizens, is whether we should take what we can now or hold off for a possible better opportunity in the future.

My suggestion is to stabilize and build up Berlin a bit, perhaps by joining loyal Fanatikan workers which has the additional benefit of reducing the chance that our new citizens will want to rejoin their former empire.

Delaying our Golden Age for a little longer would allow both Berlin and our core cities to grow further and hence get more benefit from the Golden Age. On a purely selfish note (but a selfish note that will benefit the whole of Fanatikos) The Augean Stables is being developed to build the Knights Templar. Delaying our Golden Age until more of the development work is done would speed the Knights Templar even more than a Golden Age now would.

This really is an interesting situation. We could easily kill the archer with the hoplite and start our GA, but Berlin really won't feel the effects of it, as it is size 1. However, if we do decide to wait, the archer will not stay there forever. We might blow a chance at a golden oppurtunity at a golden age. I'm not sure what to do in this situation. :hmm:

This is true, that the archer will not stay there forever. However, Germany will no doubt still be sitting to our South, and most likely pretty weak. A well timed future war that ends with a small, Hoplite battle just might do the trick.

Of course, we do have a time time limit for a UU GA. We don't want to wait until we will be upgrading our hoplites. But, then again, we could always leave one behind.

I say we wait and attempt to activate it in the late Middle Ages, early Industrial Ages.

Once again, it could be a use for us if we are going to start building our MA wonders soon. Sistine's, Knight's Templar, JS Bach's (?)..just throwing ideas around. I'm not entirely sure, but I do know that the usefulness of hoplites will be gone quickly, and opportunities like this won't last forever.

Do it. A GA now would be huge. Wonders galore, we could build any one we want in any city. Berlin is size one but it won't be forever the GA will be going on when it is a size three, it could become five over the course of the GA. KILL THE GERMAN ARCHER!!

A GA now would NOT help us gain any wonders. We can build a total of 2 wonders right now - Hanging Gardens and the Great Lighthouse. It's my estimate that we will not be able to complete either of these.

We're also far enough away from any other wonder tech-wise that a GA triggered this next session would finish BEFORE we could even start a wonder.

If at all possible, we should hold off triggering our Golden Age for at least 2 game sessions. We will then be in a position to take advantage of the GA with multiple Cathedral and Wonder builds.

The plans for the Augean Stables will start the prebuild for the Knights Templar in 3 turns, and complete approximately 34 turns later.

If we start the Golden Age now, it will complete approximately 27 turns later.

So a GA now would help us get the Knights Templar, we may even have to do some research ourselves to get the techs to complete it in that time. But will be too soon to help for any of the other Wonders (apart from Sun Tzu).
