I had no idea that they had made a sequel to Tropico. I mean, what could be more fun than being a Carribbean dictator? Why, being a Carribean Pirate King, of course!

The game is more complicated than Tropico. Basically, you command a pirate base of operations. You must build up your infrastructure to produce all of the things your pirates need to be successful on their cruises (ships, rations, weapons, etc.) You must also keep your pirates happy by building taverns, brothels, casinos, and other unsavory businesses. Pirates can be made even happier if they have access to beer, cigars and pastries, all of which can be made on your island.

All of the 'dirty work' (logging, mining, farming, cooking, wenching, and so on) is performed by captives which you gain by raiding nearby settlements. As long as you feed them enough slop and keep them scared enough through random executions they probably won't cause trouble. They can escape, though, or even start a revolt and storm your luxurious pirate palace. Some captives are wealthy and can be ransomed immediately or you can keep them on your island, while they get deeper into debt to you by using your facilities.

Your main source of income comes from pirate cruises. Once you have built a ship and recruited a captain, you can send your sea dogs out to plunder trade routes. You charge the ships a certin percentage of whatever they gain to use your docks. It helps, though, to be selective about whose ships you attack. Usually, you'll want to keep good relations with England, France, or Spain and convince one to become your patron and protect you from attacks by other powers. If you don't have a patron and one of the European powers' navy finds you, you're vulnerable to attack, but unlike in Tropico 1 it is possible to fight off invasions from major powers, provided your defences are strong enough.

I'm quickly becoming addicted to this game. I urge everyone who liked Tropico or other simulation games to try this one.

Sounds hilarious ("wenching"?). I tried the demo of the first one. Lots of laughs, not to mention a pretty cool soundtrack.

The game has lots of funny little touches too. When your pirates die, you can raise them from the dead and they walk around the island as skeletons. They haul materials around like captives but don't need sleep or food.

I downloaded and played the demo recently, and I must say it was fun! It was different enough to be a new game, yet similar enough to be a sequal. There were alot of new aspects and elements of variety in the game. I plan on getting it when the price drops some. :goodjob:

I downloaded the demo for the original Tropico. I was awesome! :goodjob:

I like the first one so I will probably pick up the sequel sometime in the future.

I own the first one, got it for 15 bucks from a bargain bin (came with the expansion as well) when tropico 2 gets to be cheaper, I will DEFINITELY buy this game.

Don't think so. It's more like Sim City than Civ.

Does it have MP capability?
No, but that's an intriguing idea. It would be great to raid each other's islands and have your ships engage each other at sea.
