I've been trying get the "Hello Cleveland" achievement. I've started several games which include the US as an AI opponent and so far Teddy has never established Cleveland, even with up to six other cities.

Instead of waiting for the RNG to finally roll my way, can I get the achievement using a renamed city? For example:
  1. Capture a US city, rename it Cleveland, then gift it back and play a concert there.
  2. Less aggressive -- plant my own city near the US, rename it and gift it to them.
Would a renamed city work? Or does the game track the original name and that's what it's based on? Thanks for any advice.

Based on my experience, renaming a city does not trigger the achievement. The most convenient approach for me was spamming cities as America and as soon as I got Cleveland, I built a Campus and gifted a city to the AI. You do not have to do the gig in Cleveland, USA, Maori Cleveland will do just as fine.

For the vanilla achievement that included New York, I put several Americas in the game to increase the chance it would show up, captured it, and got the achievement in the captured city. So I suspect that the gifting option described above would work fine - it just needs to be named Cleveland by the game. Alternately, you could put several Americas in the game, as they don't duplicate city names with duplicate civs, so there's more chance of the name showing up.

(In case you're curious, the reason I captured New York for that other achievement is that I didn't get one of the needed great people in my game playing as Teddy, so I played as Russia to make the great person requirement easier to fulfill).

Good suggestion WillowBrook. In my current game, playing as the States, I'm up to a dozen cities with no Cleveland in sight so it's getting tedious. Having a bunch of other Americas generating cities should speed things up nicely.

As an aside, I put Canada in my current game just because I thought it would be amusing to have Canada annex Cleveland. :)

Following WillowBrook's suggestion, I finally got the "Hello Cleveland" cheevie.

The band, Vinyl Sap, was ready to go by the early 1600's but Teddy hadn't built a appropriate venue for them to perform. As you can see above, there's a campus but no university. Fortunately he decided to build the Kilwa Kisiwani wonder -- which took forever -- and the band could finally play there in the mid-1800's. By that time, since they were now a 200+ year old group, that was their one and only concert. Kind of appropriate that they got the "aging rocker" moniker. :)

Oh yes, a nice touch is that the line "Hello Cleveland" is actually spoken during the concert. Cool.

This reminds me of the tediousness of getting the "Longest. Name. Ever." achievement back in Civ V. You needed to play the Celts and settle enough cities to get Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. The city name was so long that you couldn't even manually type in the name yourself so you couldn't name a city that yourself. You had to settle it normally, going through most of the city list.

I actually got the achievement without Teddy even being in the game. As Dido I founded enough cities that I ran out of Phoenician names, and began receiving American names. When Cleveland popped up, I quickly built a harbor, gifted Cleveland to the Cree and sent a Rock Band there. There are a number of different ways to get this achievement.

They could bring the achievement back with the Māori. Just wait till the city "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu" comes up.
