Trying to install CivIII Conquests

You might be right about DirectX - I've seen one other user report problems with the install after installing DirectX 9, and he said the problem disappeared when he went back to DirectX 8.2.

I just reformatted my hard drive, it was getting to crowded, and now I can't install civ 3 con. It worked fine before, never had a problem with it. The cd seems a bit used though. I'm getting the same problem as this guy. Whenever i get to 60% it gives me a cyclic redundency error. I've installed diretx 9.0b from different locations, trying to install from the cd just locks the computer up. Any help would be appreciated. I reformatted to fix problem, not to cause them :(.

I still don't have my problem resolved. I think Atari just wants to exchange my CD directly. They don't know what else to tell me to do. If you figure something out please let me know. I've had the game since Christmas and I haven't been able to play it yet.

Ok, I think I have a solution :D . I was having the same problem as you in terms of trying to uninstall. So instead I just modified it. I have winxp, don't know if this will work for other versions. From the control panel i clicked the remove button on civIII conquest. I then choose modify and selected all of the options EXCEPT for the one involving directx. I then reinstalled directx 9.0b from a pc gamer cd. When I did the modify it placed the folders in the c:\windows\conquest or c:\windows\ptw folder. I am able to launch and play the game. It seems to load slowly though, maybe i'm just being paranoid :crazyeye: . I haven't attempted to move the folders, but i'm sure i can. I hope this helps you.

Update: Ok, so I can't move the folders, it won't work if I do. It also wasn't my imagination about it running slow, after about 30 turns it became unplayable on a normal sized map. Also, the words are all funny, they are in the wrong order, almost as if its reading from the wrong text file. Don't sweat though, figured out away around. Completly uninstall everything civ related that you can. Then reinstall Civ III into the windows directory. After that, install conquest as before, but instead of doing everything except directx do each one seperatly. I just started at the top of the list and went one at a time down, skipping directx. Then I installed directx 9.0b again, and well, it worked. No problems, or slow downs, no weird text. Good as new. Be careful when installing mods or other junk because the conquest folder is not nestled inside the civ III one it causes files not to be found. You have to move them manually to a location or else change where the game looks for them. I hope you can get yours to work, its a great game.

Has kaelyn's CivIII Conquests installation problem been satisfactorily resolved? I'm interested because I'm getting the exact same error message when I try to install it. What's really frustrating is that I have installed it successfully before, but I've had to reinstall windows from scratch once or twice since then. When I successfully installed it before I had WinXP home on my machine and I have WinXP pro now. I've also tried to install it on another computer that has Win98se and have not been successful there either. The installation program detects DirectX 9.0b on both computers. But both of them apparently try to (re)install DirectX anyway. And both run into problems (and crash) when they try to install DirectX (at 60%). Although the error messages from each machine aren't exactly the same. I have sent a message to Atari tech support, but that was done only yesterday. So there hasn't been time for them to respond yet. Does anyone have any idea what going on here with the CivIII Conquests installation and the installation of DirectX? Something looks messed up just by the fact that the program says that it detects DirectX, but then tries to install it anyway -- and then can't successfully do that when it tries. Thanks for any help or ideas.

Oh well -- I wouldn't go back to DirectX 8 if I could (if that is a solution to my problem). I guess it's a good thing for me that I'd rather play Hearts of Iron than Civ 3 anyway.

P.S. And Atari tech support never did answer my request for help. I guess it's not their problem if I can't install Civ 3: Conquests.

Hey,

Thanks for all the advice. Atari finally got to the end of their ability to help. They had me send my disc back to them directly so they could send me a new one and guess what? No installation troubles at all. I am finally able to play this game that I got for Christmas.
They said that since I exchanged the disc once already the problem could have been a batch of bad discs.
My advice is to wait for Atari to email you back, but ask them right away if you can just send the disc back to them. None of the things they had me do worked.

i'm having a similar problem rite now. here's the thing... i actually had conquests installed before without any problems. i recently had to get a new hard drive and had to reinstall everything. i reinstalled civ3 and ptw w/o problems. when i tried to install conquests, i got the direct x error message and the installation would quit on its own. the most aggravating thing is i misplaced my cd number for the org. civ 3 so i dno't want to deinstall it in case i can't reinstall it again. but either way, the problem should be w/ the conquests disk anyways rite? is there something i can do to install this?
