Big Ten Apologist
@ Scib: Thanks for the clarification. Next time I'll know to prioritize my own technology better.
Welcome to the GOTMHi guys, first ever game of the month. Saw it on civ's facebook page while hyping up for civ 6Also my first ever post

Had to look up what all these abbreviations meant [emoji14]
- Did you use your UU?
I didn't use it tbh. I had them parked on nearby hills kind of like scouts.
- How useful was your UA?
From memory it was the triple plundering? Didn't use it. Never went to war. bashed like two barb camps and just ignored the world.
- Did you use spying to your advantage?
Grabbed all science tech then bee-lined for diplomats from spies. Easy win first world leader vote.
- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
I was quite pleased with a map type i hadn't tried before. The desert just seemed op to me. I got my faith up, desert folklore, petra, GG.
- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
It bored me, I play every game on immortal and diety so this game was just too one sided. I just did things on my second screen and forgot I was meant to be going for a good speed/score :/
- Was Faith helpful to achieve victory? How? Did you build any faith wonders?
Of course, Unique building for faith, got folklore, got pagodas and monastaries from memory. Used the piety tree to unlock ability to buy science buildings with faith. Proceed to instantly purchase all tech buildings in every city the turn they are available. I'm sure I got a few faith wonders, was so far ahead in tech i built more than half the wonders.
- What Social Policies did you choose and in what order? Which Ideology did you choose?
Liberty first, to rush my preferred spots. Piety second for mass faith and better prophet tiles. Patronage third cause at this point i knew what i was gonna play for, Freedom fourth cause i had 4 cities and wanted to boost it, commerce last cause I had waaaay too many policies and nothing left to grab.
- What techs did you prioritize ?
Techs to utilise surroundings, techs to boost science, the tech for diplomats from spies.
- How did the policy restrictions affect your game? What did you use to offset the science loss from not having the Rationalism Tree?
I lik tradition a lot but it is a slow starter, just wasn't for me in this game even with the restriction. I rarely use rationalism. What is the point in teching ahead every game? To me it was just an average game, absolutely no impact from the restriction, just pushed city pops and got all the wonders. From memory my cities were pops 45, 29, 29 and 21 and i got all the science specialists and wonders, was never lacking. 655.75 science in my capital and 1507 total across my 4 cities.
- Did the pace affect your plans?
No, wasn't warring so i didn't care about the speed. Just queue everything up and spam end turn.
Overall I enjoyed the GOTM. Honostly hoping for more in future. Higher difficulties or more restrictions or maybe just a really crappy start location. Stuff to throw me off and make me work for the victory.
Welcome to the GOTM and Civ FanaticsHi everyone! This was my first GoTM (and this is my first post!)
Game statusiplomacy Victory
Game date:1980AD
Turns played:260
Base score:1711
Final score:2193
- Did you use your UU?
Yes, but not any differently than a regular knight.
- How useful was your UA?
Meh, gave a bit of extra gold.
- Did you use spying to your advantage?
Rigged some elections. I don't think it made much of a difference.
- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
The starting location was *ridiculously* good. I don't think I've ever seen such a number of good uncontested city sites. The nearby faith CS got me a pantheon without any shrine even, the pantheon was obviously desert folklore and that got me a quick religion.
- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
It didn't, but it should haveUntil I finished the game I didn't think about how this was a competition for speed/score, I was just playing my usual way and it was really easy. Only after finishing it did I realize I could have done a lot more to get a better speed.
- Was Faith helpful to achieve victory? How? Did you build any faith wonders?
Faith was great. I got tithe and rolled in the dough. Poland and Germany were both my religion (germany founded their own but then I took their holy city).
- What Social Policies did you choose and in what order? Which Ideology did you choose?
Liberty, Commerce/Patronage, Autocracy.
- What techs did you prioritize ?
First what I needed for my luxes, then for Petra, then for whatever seemed relevant in the short-term.
- How did the policy restrictions affect your game? What did you use to offset the science loss from not having the Rationalism Tree?
I usually go tradition so I went liberty this time. What offset the loss of Rationalism was the difficulty level, lol.
- Did the pace affect your plans?
It was my first time playing on quick. It didn't really change my planning, I don't really know what it does.
I basically settled my own little area plus a sliver of Germany's with 5 cities, eventually took Berlin, and then teched and turtled and wonder-whored. obviously won on the first vote with lots of spare votes, with my religion as world religion and my ideology as world ideology... but after the game I realized I should have been trying to speed things up...
Faster than T136 right above your post? Show me!I think ATEX is right: 'Fun game, but probably faster to kill all but two AI."
For our opening strategy, see the Opening Actions thread.

Good luck!
Kendon, with regard to ruins: I got upgrades, gold and survivors. In other games it's early culture or faith.
The art is in profiting from what you find. Put your upgrades to good use. Spend that gold. And the advantage of survivors will die out without an extra Worker to improve the tiles or the happiness to afford that extra citizen. Add more culture or faith so it's worth something. Move your combat units to the camps that got revealed so you can profit when the city state quests come in.![]()
