TSG 271 Opening Actions

fall of Samoa T45: note how the spearman is setup to soak up damage as AI most likely targets the lower left most unit, so the 5 archers can fire away unharmed
Pretty impressive times!

Did you get the spearman from a ruin, or hard built?

4 scouts, then bows. One warrior is more than enough to capture cities at the beginning of the game, and a scout can help. Although the spear is certainly better. In addition, warlike CS will give you melee units later. Exploration is more important than the speed of capturing the first cities, as it will allow you to plan the correct logistics of conquest earlier. In addition, with such an early conquest from one or two cities, the capture of cities is much more profitable than their destruction.

Encouraged by my extremely late shameful diplo Ram game, I just run this one to see, on which stage I would give up.
I don't usually play Deity, most of the time Immortal or relax Emperor, but with China given I may try. All my Deity wins were just turtling science, so I do not expect too much, I am definitely not the type of warmonger

- Where did you settle and what did you build first?
I went on incense for gold boost, scout, monument, scout, GRANARY having 4 resources, worker (?) settler (?) mids (?) Luckily one scout turn into archer, the other died quickly

- How did the terrain and map settings affect your early decisions?
Great land we have, having faith wonder in the east made that spot a clear priority. I was given 30 culture, so went Liberty left side to get the settler. Unlike others I settled more defensively with it in 2nd ring, I did not expect buying a tile so expensive :] Anyway, I had to, because i stole a worker (and later killed settler) of Polynesia, so expected some counterattack, which never came. Anyway, I think this place is perfect, as now I can laugh at Genghis attemts to sneak there :P
I also settled coast for luxies.
I also stole a worker from Prague.

- What were your initial priorities?
Improve land asap as it looks so slowly. This is why I also went for Mids, but lost around t70 by 2 turns -_-
Later I had enough workers stolen, so I don't go right liberty, and made left honor a priority

- What tech path did you follow and why?
Pottery for granary and masonry for marble (Mids wanted!), those were 3 initials. Later Calendar for happy, late AH, Archery, roads. Detour to writing and straight to machinery. Machinery taken t150, national epic around t130

- What Social Policies did you choose?
Left Liberty, then left honour for faster XP, now completing right honour, 1 policy left. I Oracled probably +50%xp

- What Wonders did you try to get and did you get them?
Mids lost, Oracle taken, not trying for anything else.
Simply no hammers for it, I build too few units and need to spam

- Did you get a religion? What religious beliefs did you pick?
Pantheon - culture from pastures.
I managed to get a late religion, around t135 or so, went for gold from citizens, as I don't see my religion spread widely and buying units for faith. At least I may use it in opposite to everything else left.

WARS :D
Polynesia, started from worker stealing, I had to wait until composites to take Samoa and Honolulu, I left them with one minor city only as it is too early to get all those warmonger penalties, Honolulu captured maybe around around t130, don't remember, basically Polynesia was so kind, that they moved 4charge prophet nearby, so now I have 1 holy site :)
Then moved toward Zurych to declare on Mongolia, as they were already engaged with Zulu. Of course they immedietely peaced with Shaka :D Anyway, Zurych liberated, when I clear the rest of the doomcarpet moving to Karakorum. Inital scout-archer already has +1 range, and soon more would have, so I do not expect problems even later while taking Tokyo with great wall.
Of course I have to research horsback riding first :P In 3 turns :P

Anyway, with such a set of opponents, I do not expect to win
And my scouting is below average. Constantly dying scouts.

I got curious and tried an archer rush in a replay.

I took Samoa t58, and Honolulu t67 with 6 or 7 archers (I think I had 7 but one was still at the capital fighting off barbs). I had one Spearman from a ruin, and one warrior.

After taking Honolulu, I then marched my little army toward Karakorum. They barely reached Zurich, which Mongolia was just invading. I could have maybe liberated Zurich, if Assyria wouldn't have sent their carpet of doom toward Honolulu. My army turned around to try and fend them off, but their numbers were just too big. Siege towers take a lot of archer shots to kill.

Even if I could have recaptured Honolulu I was probably too far behind already in tech and infrastructure.

Build order was: Warrior, scout, archers until I had 7 of them, then granary and I bought a monument at some point.

I was still last in military despite building nothing but units.

Glad I built a bit of infrastructure first in my original playthrough! Archer rush seems to be a rather advanced tactic on deity.
