Welcome to Civilization 5 Game of the Month - GOTM #274
These games allow new and old GOTM fans to play Civ 5 in a friendly competitive environment. Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for.

How to play:
1) Download the savefile, then place it in the Saves\single folder. The default paths the folder are:
Windows: ...\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\single\
Mac: ~/Documents/Aspyr/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Saves/single/ or ~/Library/Application Support/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Saves/single/
Linux: ~/.local/share/Aspyr/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Saves/single/
2) On the turn of your victory (or defeat), use the "lemme play one more turn" feature and save the game
3) Attach your final savefile in the After actions thread - temporary solution while the GOTM website is being worked on

Where to discuss the game:
1) Announcement (this thread) - pre-game thoughts and questions
2) Opening actions - the first 100 turns
3) After actions - post-game discussion and feedback

MUST READ!
Our most sacred rule: Do not replay any turns!
If you make a mistake, accept it, and try to recover through game-play. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to "1 turn". In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous autosave, then play on the same way you played it the first time. Please let Leif or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

This game runs through November 6th 2025

Niceee domination with insta city razing is awesome!! Thanks @vadalaz :D

EDIT: Sorry I might be wrong here, I assumed Venice works like One City Challenge but it seems you can puppet cities you conquer. So no insta razing.

Does the collective rule free Venetian merchant prompt us to go for Liberty? I guess Tradition is a no-no with just one measly monument and one sad looking aquaduct for free?

Hmm I'd probably still go Tradition, for the extra food and happiness, and wonder bonus... or maybe Honor since it's domination...

Liberty with an OCC isn't exactly great either! Guess we could connect some city states with roads if we buy them... but not sure I even want any expos since we can't decide what to build in them.

I don't see anything in the description about "one city challenge". In Venice domination games, I try to puppet AI capitals (you just can't annex them) and use most of my merchants for double-gold trade missions instead of buying city states. No idea how this one will turn out; there's probably a nasty surprise waiting for us 😂

Oh I was under the belief that cities we conquer will just go "poof" and vanish... is that not true?

EDIT: I just checked. Looks like I was mistaken. Sorry!

Anyone else thinking about moving to the river? I'm tempted but you lose a Sugar; and with Venice its not like you can build an expo to get it so its a bigger loss than a normal civ. There's nothing to the west that we'll miss; a bunch of waterless grassland and plains. I'll move the warrior to the Deer to hopefully check out what's over along the river.
Edit. Actually I’m going to move the warrior SW then east to the hill, just to make sure there’s no offshore luxuries I’d be missing by going to the river. That would be disastrous if there was a third unique lux just out of view in the sea.

I don't think you actually need to settle on the river if you want to win early domination. What do you get? Garden and watermill, both are not very important for early domination win I think.
I'm thinking of moving just 1 NE with the settler to not move too far away from the stone and marble. It will have a deer to work and frees up 1 forest to chop. And it moves closer to the river to get more fresh water tiles and is still coastal to produce boats.

Hmm, I wasn’t thinking about quick domination, never been able to do that. I wouldn’t know how. Although Venice would be the one to try it with since can’t be distracted by building settlers. I did see a description of what to do recently in one of these forums; I’ll have to see if I can find it.

Is going tradition really worth it instead of trad opener for culture and straight full honour > explo/patronage?

I played small continents recently as Polynesia and ended up with 2 more civs on the same continent, 2 more accessable by shallow water and only few remaining needed ocean crossing

not crazy about the start...is coastal necessary here? the only thing with venice is the coastal trade routes would be nice but then you have to protect them and all. I'll see what the warrior spies to the NE but may move inland....or 1NE or on that hill if it is worth it. I usually always want to build a few good early wonders as venice.

Right now reli is not looking helpful.

I like the trad opener and then the merchant usually, but now hearing puppets ain't worth it. Maybe I can hold off on the free merchant and focus on growth, then a merch later to puppet a CS with a lot of units.
