TSG12 Game in Progress

No RA's, no puppeting

I'm playing this to see if the old-fashioned empire-building is still a valid option, i.e. I'm grabbing land / resources.

It is currently turn 121. We have 7 cities and just discovered Astronomy; three scouting units plunged into the deep. :crazyeye:

London was settled on the Sugar, to have both ocean access and the opportunity to build an observatory. Our exploring warrior found no ruins (nor did the Scout we bought later), but it did find Tyre and a full-health Brute camping on a chokehold to the south. It chanced an attack and healed up twice to finally break through and meet China, just in time to sell our Sugar to them.

Civil Service was b-line, so we started on a Worker. As in most of my games, the Great Library went to the AI (to China, in fact). Civil Service took 17 turns to research. The compensation was that we did manage to get The Oracle.

Astronomy got bulbed by the free Great Scientist from the Porcelain Tower, which itself was rushed by a Great Engineer at exactly the right time. :)

Since turn 91, Tyre is our ally, even though we stole a Worker from them early on (a calculated risk: China wouldn't give us full price after that). They gifted us a Chariot Archer already. :scan:

On turn 107, we began a 30-turn Golden Age. :king:

At turn 160 (1000ad) we have met everyone. Japan almost immediately declared on us when we settled nearby to claim Pearls, and we had to buy a Pikeman to protect our Worker. They are weak and bankrupt though, as is the other aggressive nation, Germany, and soon peace broke out. India is an economic powerhouse, Egypt is also doing well, while Mongolia and the Ottomans are puny, poor and timid. :crazyeye:

We have added 4 more cities: on two islands claiming Gold and Silver, and on the other continent for Pearls and Whales. Our new technology target after Astronomy was Chemistry, which arrived on turn 156. :)

This turn we have adopted Scholasticism and things are looking well, a finish around turn 230 seems possible. London, now size 18, completed the Hagia Sophia and is working on the National Epic. Then, with all the multipliers in place, we will try and produce some great scientists. :mischief:

Notes: Germany conquered Geneva, but quickly lost it to India. China recently declared war on us but were unable to get past our allied city states, and rather found themselves in danger of losing a city to them! The war lasted 5 turns, we killed a Spearman.

It is now turn 183 and it appears that we have two sources of Coal nearby, at Coventry and at Warwick. :)

London simultaneously popped a Great Scientist (standing by for the endgame) and a Great Engineer, which got spent on the Taj Mahal. A Public School was rush-bought in the capital for 1030g. London, York and Nottingham all have an Observatory. A Great General is ready to prolong the current Golden Age with another 12 turns, which will bring in the last (11th) University in time for Oxford. :mischief:

We joined a punitive expedition of India and Egypt against Japan, that annoyingly kept plopping down cities on everybody's doorstep. Our small force conquered Nara and Osaka and sold both to India, before making peace. India paid all their gpt for Osaka, yet somehow they managed to find another 40gpt the next turn plus the money to acquire an ally, so the fight for the city states is still on. ;)

The capital has grown to size 22, and techs are arriving at a nice pace.

Turn 170-something and I just quit. (I guess I've forgotten how to play Vanilla) China declared war on me and attacked with about 50 pikes and knights and ChuKoNus against my half dozen (total) swords and pikes and archers. My cities all have walls, but there's no way I can survive that; I kill two of their units and they kill one of mine, after a couple of turns I got nothing left and they still have 30+ units (plus the well-armed CS's they allied right before declaring on me, and they also are sending pikes and crossbows)

I should have killed Wu's settlers as soon as they showed up on my little continent.
