Incidentally, is it possible that you might get a sneak attack from an AI with whom you have a defence pact?

Ok, thanks for the information. I will exclude yours when results are published. Im glad your are trying above your comfort level. It is a great but sometimes irritating way to learn, haha. Hopefully you still had some fun!

This one has done me as well. Went for 4 city tall tradition approach with caravans feeding to start up the cities. Turn 180 I am fighting the AI with Frigates and they have submarines.... I am lagging behind the AI by an entire era! Not quite sure where it all went wrong to be honest I can normally win on immortal.

The island just west of the start location has Pearls on an Atol so you cannot improve the resource.... grrr!!!!
