Welcome to the TSG144 Opening Actions thread.

STOP - Please do not continue reading this thread until you have completed at least 80 to 100 turns in your game.

This thread is used to discuss the game once you've started playing through your first 100 turns. Apart from normal decency, the only posting restrictions are to please not post videos until the deadline is finished and to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. Please remember that we are running a family friendly site, so express anger or frustration with this in mind. :)

Please use this thread to discuss your goals for the game and your opening moves through the first 100 turns. Anything after that should be posted in the After Actions thread once you have completed your game.

- Where did you settle your city?
- For OCC on archipelago, what was your opening build order? Tech Order?
- How many civs have you met so far?
- Did you play a practice game before release to get a feel for these settings?

Please use spoiler tags for any surprise details you'd like kept hidden. Thanks.

turn 101.

- settled turn 2 on the only visible hill in the screenshot. 2nd and 3rd fish as well as the marble and sugar were pleasant surprises. as well as the hill having iron underneeth it.
- considering it is OCC archipelago small maps didn't build a scout. went steele, worker, granary, 2 triremes to meet others fast for science boost, lighthouse , worker.
- tech order mining, pottery, sailing, optics, masonry, calendar, iron working, writing
- got very good ruins on my home continent - animal husbandry, pop, 60 faith, then got 3 or 4 more after optics with embarkation - 1 pop, 1 tech and 2 insignifficant
- met all the civs before turn 75 and 11/12 CS and i am friendly with india and morocco who are buying my horses and iron for insta gold
- religion turn 52 - earth mother, tithe, mosques
- got hanging gardens turn 66 and oracle turn 90 to finish tradition
- NC turn 99 cause i greeded out oracle and also tried mausoleum which went very late (turn 94)
- bought Vatican City for the WLDK day lux to blow my university money but i am making 30/turn so it's likely I raise the money before I hit the tech
- selling 2 of 4 luxes to a.i because i smoked too much and i am too happy :p
- cap at 17 pop thanks to HG so i have no worries that i will catch up in science where i am 3 techs behind
- no practice games, in fact this is my first ever OCC. I'm liking it so far

I played a practice game last week and it was a lot of fun. Downloaded this one last night and played 100 turns or so (they go by quickly with just one city) Let's see how much I can remember... (I may edit this tonight)

Settled in place on turn 0 after checking out the hill with my warrior. Initial tech order was Pottery, Mining, (archery from a ruin), AH, Writing, Calendar, then beelined mathematics for Hanging Gardens. I didn't build any scouts because Archipelago; went straight to stele to get faith and culture rolling early. Next I built granary, worker, Artemis, archer, archer, library, shrine, Hanging Gardens. That order might not be exactly right but it's close. After HG and in no particular order I built walls, a lighthouse, trireme, National College, pike. I probably could have gotten Oracle if I had started it before NC but I didn't want to risk it. After NC I went for it and got beat.

Even with the late shrine, I founded a pantheon pretty quickly, and might have founded the first religion if my first prophet hadn't been so late (-9 turns). God-King, Tithe, Guruship (never tried this one before), Religious Texts, Swords into Plowshares.

I did very little exploring. Found Morocco and a few CS's, and let all the other AI's find me. (I've met them all) I thought Morocco was going to declare war on me early on. Three warriors and an archer showed up just as I was building my first archer. My starting warrior had upgraded to a spear and he was fortified on the border. While they were trying to figure out what to do, I finished the archer and they backed off. Later, Morocco did forward-settle me and claimed the marble and sugarcane that I would've gotten eventually. I quickly bought all the 3-ring tiles between us. Ahmad and I are friends right now; he's buying salt and horses from me and I'm sending him a cargo ship, but eventually that city will have to go.

I'm already number one in science and middle of the pack in military. I didn't expect to be caught up this fast. I think I'll enter the industrial era via Fertilizer because it's the fastest route, and Gunpowder and Chemistry are good techs to have anyway. Then do the usual: beeline Electricity and use Oxford to pop Radio for an ideology. Hopefully the detour to Fertilizer doesn't cost me first pick at Freedom ideology (it shouldn't)

Hei. Turn 133 now.

Settled in place, seemed like a good spot to get luxuries, jungle and worried I got to much ocean by going on the hill. Salt and got an early 1 pop ruin, bought up the second salt tile and beelined for great library, thought I try with such a good start position.
Build order Stele -> Granary -> GL (bought worker) -> NC - Hanging Garden - Second Worker - Oracle (thought either I complete it and get influence with milan and an policy or I get some money)....
A bit behind on infrastructure after a few high cost buildings but catching up now one building and boat at a time. Number one in sience that GL gave me an early GS and just got my second.
DANGER! DANGER! Dido is plotting against me, we will see if she will go to war. Have to explore more but finished one tireme and bought a second that I upgraded at once I got to astronomy so shouldnt be to long now. Not used to one city challenge, to much to do and only one city to do it with :-(. GL HF :)

Turn 100, and things are going fairly well.

I have no experience with OCC, but I recall a GoTM some time ago with a similar start to this one. In that game, I did do a few practice-runs and was surprised how good ToA was. Thus I decided to go all in for ToA in this game, and committing to a cardinal sin - delaying NC and discovery of the other civs/city states.

Tech order: mining-archery-optics
Build order: stele-worker-ToA-lighthouse-cargo ship-library-water mill-caravan-NC

Notable turns:
42 ToA
53 Lighthouse
80 All civs discovered
84 NC finally built
94 full tradition
95 Oracle

- Where did you settle your city?
I settled in place. I was tempted by the sugar in the south if I moved to the hill, but in the end decided (wisely, I think) that the salt would be enough for early production, and a windmill would be nice late game.
- For OCC on archipelago, what was your opening build order? Tech Order?
See above. Tech influenced by the salt (mining) and my idea of going for ToA. Other than that, optics is normal with sea resources within reach.
- How many civs have you met so far?
All of them.
- Did you play a practice game before release to get a feel for these settings?
No, but I did practice for a similar GoTM some time back.
